I have been meaning to do this for a while, sort of working my way up to it. I did my first full convex on my HRLM two years ago. Then I did a ASH1, Camp Tramp, Sarsquatch, NMSFNO. This afternoon I started on The Big One, my FFBM. I am nearly done. Darkness stopped me.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

It's getting there. A full convex zero edge. This should chop like crazy.

woah!
nice vic.
that last little bit always feels the longest (for me at least) but it looks like you're pretty much there.
Pink: doesn't ban convex a lot of his fbm's and stuff?
how is the difference vs just convexing the edge?
I guess you thin it a lot to convex it?

I worked on it for four hours. I still have a flat area in the center to grind down to, but it's almost there. It is a major job for a 1/3 HP 1" x 43" sander. I start at the spine and grind edge up, not grinding the very edge but working the whole blade down to it. Once I get the full convex profile from spine to edge, I'll go to finer grits and then finish the edge. I have already worn out one blue zirconia 80 grit on it. If the weather holds, I should finish it tomorrow. You really have to try a full convex to appreciate its chopping superiority.

It looks better today. I worked on it from 10:00 until 1:00. I still had some flat spots to sand out.

I took it out back for a little chopping test. It chops clean on hard maple.

It slashes limber stuff well now but the edge is a bit thin. I rolled it some on the maple. No problem, I can fix it in 2 minutes.

It slices well. I'm done here.

Look down the blade. They show up dull and and dark. They are left over from the flat saber grind. I mark them with a sharpie and by the time I grind the marks away, the blade is ready for a finer grit.

Nice job Vic. You should be Blowing INFI powder out of your nose for a few days now... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

No joke. The wind shifted and I put a bandana over my nose, but it was 95F today with high humidity, so I had to take it off. Lot of nose blowing out INFI dust. Then the sweat from my face would fall on the blade and leave spots. But I had to finish the job. Now this really is the last full convex Busse I'm doing! It took me two years to work up to the big job, but I am happy with the results.

I think that's common with a fresh full convex, edge always starts a little thin but gets thicker as you sharpen it.

It looks really good, great job. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

And whatever happened to Boots SOD? I never saw the final product. I want to see what my stripped tan SOD will looks like one day.

Thanks, Pink. I have had brand new Bark Rivers do the same thing, but a few strokes with a ceramic rod and no more problems. The edge is fine now. As for Boots' SOD, I had to do some extra ginding on it to get out the the grind marks. It was a repair job. Here is how it looked when I sent it back to him.

Yeah, after picking one up and holding it in hand at BLADE, the only use I could think of for it would be to use as a diving board, and I don't have a pool <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

I had no idea a SOD could look that good. I prefer it over the LE.

Yes, I am planning on doing a full convex satin finish on the Waki. Thank God it isn't INFI. The hamon line should be beautiful. I hope.

The waki was already one of those goofy convex grind with a different angle convex edge setups - shouldn't be bad at all to give it the zero edge, at least compared to some of the knives out there.

Simon - that is a nice blade. The FFBM is on my wish list some day. You gave yours a nice edge.

Nice work, Simon. They really do chop better that way, don't they?

HD , I really had No idea of the amount of love and labor that convex takes to put on. It seems like a different knife when you get done...I bought a second hand SFNO that had that treatment....My CO bought it for $1000 off me in Iraq. Dan should hire you to do the YARD Custom Convex LEs...We would pay extra for your treatments.

I would say they chop MUCH better this way, especially the FFBM. I feel sorry for those who have the original edge on their FFBMs and use them for chopping.

Everybody should have a beltsander and the knowledge to put a convex edge on their knives <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /><img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Jeremy Horton does some great mods to Busses. He has the big grinder and can do it much easier than those of us with small sanders.
