question for you fellow gear heads... what padlock do you think is the most secure for locking up valuables in a detached garage? i understand that the sliding bolt that attaches to the door is just as important, but holding all things equal, what is the best padlock?

in particular, opinions or knowledge on keyed vs. combo?

are the contractor grade masterlocks any good?

any experience with abus or abloy locks? are abloys worth the $$$?

this is what i'm currently using.

thanks...

i've used those disk locks before, i just feel uneasy about them. i'm of the frame of mind that if it takes a key, it can be picked. that said, there are companies out there that are more creative with their tumblers than the standard padlock makers. that first link is a lock type i have never used before. despite it's toughness to cut, i would be nervous about it being picked.

Good point. Here in Cali and during these times you definitely want something you can trust. I had no idea these vids were on utube. Crazy.

Looks like Abloy is the way to go.

You'd be suprised how easy it is to pick a lock using just the tension bar and 1 squiggly pick. I am not trained, can you tell from my technical lockpick speak? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Standard Master locks are pretty easy to pick with just the combo I mentioned above. I can usually pick them in under 30 secs. Office locks: desks and cabinets in the workplace...forget about security - 5 secs usually with a paperclip and a small screwdriver for tensioning.

I work in IT and those security cables used to secure laptops to desks are easy to pick with just a piece of cardboard. It's amazing when people leave the company either willingly or forcefully, they don't turn in their keys on the way out. I'm sure it's not a good thing but I am the go to guy when a key can't be located and a laptop is stuck chained to a desk...

ah locks.......

locks keep honest people from taking your stuff. Locks simply slow down thieves. TIME is a thieves worst enemy. Lets say there are two motorcycles, equal value, locked up in a garage. Bike 1 has a simple cable lock, bike 2 has a 1/2" grade 80 chain with a hi end shielded padlock, chained to an anchor plate in a concrete floor.

which bike will thief steal? Bike 1. Why? TIME. it takes him less time to get thru the cable and take the binke.

If you want to stop stop thieves, start by securing your property/home like an onion. WHAT? Bushman5 is into the sauce again! WTH is he talking about?

An onion has layers. You need to think about home security in layers. First layer is a row of thick prickly shrubs. Second layer is a good fence and gate. Third layer is a dog. ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC
