Bowl me over! Magnificent rifle! I have a question. Traditional AK's are not known for their accuracy after, let's say, 100 yards or so. How does this bad boy compare?

Is that a Chinese or Russian rifle? Very nice, I always love Ak's and I had 10 at one time. Sold all of them but 4 of them, 2 Chinese pre-bans (ak56s and Polytech Legend) 1 Bulgarian SLR-95 and 1 Hungarian (SA-2000). I had the chance to shoot some sweet ak's while in Iraq. I have some pics I will post in another thread, but there where 2 sweet Bulgarian milled underfolder ak's that I shot at a range and they were sweet!!!

Russian designed. IIRC, these rifles were built on Polish and Bulgarian part kits. The RPD will be more accurate than an AK because of the longer brl, a more rigid receiver (no flex like a stamped one), and the gas system (no piston connected to the bolt carrier).

Ah, yes. That was it, the gas system. Thanks Sumo. Banana Clip, I've been looking at getting an AK and I know there is a difference in stamped vs milled but how big of a difference is it really? Having had so many AK's I figured you could tell me first hand! Thanks

Yeah standard AK's (and my FAL's for that matter) shoot anywhere from 2-4 MOA. The kit this rifle was made from had a very nice barrel. It did not look like it had been shot much. I will be able to take it out and shoot it the weekend after next since work is killing me right now. I will need to sight it in so I will post on what kind of groups it shoots. I am kind of spoiled in the accuracy area since I usually shoot AR's and my Remy bolt gun is a 1MOA rifle. This one is more for fun.

It was my dad who got me in to AK's. First it was AR's, then FAL's, then AK's. Mainly because my dad assembling a couple FAL's from kits and then we got setup for AK's. This RPD was a bit over our heads due to the conversion from open bolt to closed bolt so we farmed this one out. One of my favorite AK's is the AMD65. It's compact and makes a nice Jeep gun for trips out in the desert. Here is a pic of the AMD when it was new. ![[Linked Image from i88.photobucket.com]](http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k185/rteagard/Knives/amd_1911_ss4.jpg)

Thanks I don't have much experience with milled receiver AK's, but the folks I know who have them tell me they tend to be more accurate. The one gunsmith I know who has built many AK's told me that they the milled receivers are harder to work with than the stamped receivers. But if you are not building one, that's not a problem. The milled guys are also heavier.

Those are some great pics. It brings back a lot of memories. The milled guns are a little heavier and are harder to build but usually more accurate. I had one of the Bulgarian milled guns and it was quite accurate. I've owned two of the Russian Veprs, and they were built off of the RPK light machinegun receiver. It had a much thicker receiver and barrel than a regular AK. This meant that the accuracy was great for an AK. It usually grouped lest than 2" at a 100 yards but with 154 Grain soft points, I could usually keep it around 1" at a hundred. That was outstanding for an AK variant. The Romanian guns I had usually grouped in the 4-6" range, and my Chinese NMH91s and MAK90 grouped about 3-4", just for a comparison. Unfortunately, I no longer own any of them, but I sold the Bulgarian AK to one friend and the Russian VEPR to another. So, I still get to see and shoot them every now and again.

Thanks for the responses guys, I didn't know you could get groups that tight. Even 4"-6" would be good enough for me. The shop I go to has the stamped receivers at half the price of the milled ones so I may just go that route, thanks again!
