There has been a bit of a trend lately with some behavior here and we hope we can nip it in the bud!

First up, there has been a bit of a decline in language. We work to try and keep the forum at the G-Rating level. A number of members have young children that are around while they are on the forum. Please keep this in mind when you are posting. It isn't just limited to outright profanity, but anything questionable. After a bit, you will find that it does make the Yard even better!

Second, the Yard is not an exclusive club. We want to welcome everyone we can here. We want everyone to feel welcome. To me, I find the Yard has that old clubhouse feel. We have a great bunch of folks who hang around, relaxing and discussing a common interest. New members are to be welcomed into the fold! We know that occasionally a new member will need a bit of guidance to understand the Yard and it should be given in the most friendly manner possible, after all we are unlike any other forum out there and it is bound to be a shock!

I want to preserve the difference in character between the Dogs and Hogs; I've almost always found the Scrap Yard forum to be a more collegial place. That's not to paint all Hogs as bad, in part because I'm one of them too. I really think it's only a few who try to establish themselves as superior to "piglets" and all newer Hogs based on seniority, but we can be (and usually are) better than that.

I'm pretty sure that I know which thread prompted this one (although I agree that there has been a general trend, and that it was a last straw sort of event), but I see their point too. Folks took offense to how something was asked, and from their perspective, they stepped up to defend Scrap Yard knives. In general, I don't think that's wrong, but there are different ways to get the point across that range from brutally confrontational to gently nudging someone toward your position.

Try to give someone who's fairly new to the yard the benefit of the doubt, but if you think someone is entirely out-of-line, and that the only things you can think to say will probably make matters worse, then click on the red triangle at the end of the "Post Extras:" to report their comments to the Mods. Personally, I find reporting other folks comments distasteful, but it's better than escalating a situation needlessly. I think Chris and Tom have both done an outstanding job to defuse situations and helping make the Scrap Yard forum a pleasant place to hang out.

ColdOne +1, the super friendly and mature community in the yard is the main reason why I hand around.

When I came to the Yard , I watched and listened to the topics , the Dogs and got a feel before I jumped in. I didn't introduce myself...I just merged with the pack. Although I had 30+ years on the general blade industry , I found a wealth of information with the Brothers of the Yard. I may stand out in my experiences , but I learn more from watching than speaking. Always submit to those with time and grade. The Yard IS a excellent group with more knowledge and experience in one place than years of studies on the knife and steel in any school or service. I thank the Yard and the Dogs for the opportunity to run with THIS pack. LONG live the Yard.

I agree with the above. I know when I first got here I made a statement on politics that was a little out of line but I was treated with respect on the way it was handled. I do know this is one of the few sites that I love to hit on a multi-daily basis because of the people here.
