This is just an observation but from reading posts on here it seems that recently SR101 has really jumped in popularity. Is this just do to the Waki, Regulator and S5 releases? Were people just that impressed with the durability displayed by the Waki in the pics and vids that were released? This may not be true but it just seems to me that people have really jumped from the SR77 bandwagon to the SR101 bandwagon and I'm just curios as to some of the reasons why.

Disclaimer: I like both SR77 and SR101 so this is pure curiosity.

for me it is easy, I have owned several knives in both steels and I have not had all that good of luck with the edge holding ability of S7, 52100 holds a much better edge and for me is more than tough enough. I can't forsee a situation where I would ever break one, it really is a terrific steel. I want to edit to add that I can't sharpen a knife at all, maybe if I had more ability in that department the S7 wouldn't bother me but I am really green in that department.

The Chopweiler did it for me. Even after a bunch of chopping, the edge would still shave my arm. The DFLE held its edge well enough, but not quite as well as the CW. Besides, I want to get on the bandwagon. For once, it's good to be going with the crowd.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

To me, it's just what is being offered right now. I don't know enough about SR77 vs. SR101 to say I like one over the other. I'm going off of what some of the other more experienced knife guys are writing and showing from actual testing and usage or testing from websites like Knifetest.com. I especially like that story about the guy cutting his way out of an upside down off road vehicle using a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. That's a true testament to all of Busse Kin's knives. Besides, it's a lot more than I would ever put any of my knives through, but it nice to know that they can do it. I can say that I'm looking forward to getting my S5CG and hopefully an S5LE in INFI.

SR101 has been popular since the beginning of the Swamp but was never an option for the Yard, and as such was never discussed. Now that we know it's an option for Scrap Yard knives you see a lot of guys excited about SR101 combined with ResC. I hope that we see a lot of SR101 in the Yard.

It's been over 7 years since the SR101 became my favorite steel. It's not as expensive as INFI and it offer "almost" as much. It is strong enough with its differentially heat treat with longer blades like the BR and CT; and it holds its edge very well in small blades like the HR.

Don't overlook the fact that SR-101 has been around since many of us "old-timers" first found Swamp Rat! I have always been VERY happy with my Swamp Rat knives, though I was sorry to see the Swamp discontinue the Resiprene-C handles. Of course, that was just the door opening for the emergence of Scrap Yard Knife Company! Dan's policy of "Superior Performance to Price Ratio", combined with the great toughness of S-7 steel has been a welcomed addition to the knife world. As I have said many times, most of us will never push our knives to the limit, thereby making the differences very subtle to most.

Bottom line --- they're ALL great!

I figure that if some guy can use a Camp Tramp to cut through his truck
door to save himself after an accident, then SR101 will be plenty tough
for anything I will ever do.
Couple that with better edge handling ability than SR77, and you have a
combination that is extremely hard to beat.

Which is why I own 3 knives made from SR101.

Having said that, I would never turn down a knife made from SR77.
My SOD performs very well, and I would love to have a Dog Father.
