SR-101 is Swamp Rat Knife Company steel.

SR-77 is Scrap Yard Knife Company steel.

INFI is Busse Combat Knife Company steel.

I'm not sure why so many Dogs are jumping ship from SR-77. It has always been good enough for any blade ever made by The Yard.
The recent fervor over Swamp Rats steel making a "sneak" appearance in The Yard is expected.
After the spate of 154CM Stainless Steel which raised the bar for Scrap Yard by being more flexible in the steel choices it makes. The recent SR-101 craze is just not warranted.

Swamp Rat steel is no better than Scrap Yard steel when they are used by human beings. The load of SR-77 I own has always been over the top in what my extreme needs were. It has always performed flawlessly. The sharpening ability of SR-77 is no harder or easier for me than SR-101. They are both heat treated with the same specs that Busse uses to overcook INFI.

Days not hours of heat treat make all of their steel hard to sharpen compared to others.

To jump ship and raise a SR-101 flag in my opinion is just not warranted.
The Yard introduced SR-77 into the world and took it and ALL of us by storm. For us to turn our backs and jump ship is NOT what a Dog does.
A Dog stands by its master through thick and thin. Supporting him in any decision he makes. And loving him for it.

When Dan decides to play with optional steel grades it is for the real reason he started his company. It is called SCRAP Yard.
SCRAP being the key word. He dumpster dives and takes what the others don't or can't use.
He started his knife empire in SR-77 and made it into what it is now. A stand alone company that sells out every model ever made.
Using his shock steel we rallied about screaming the virtues of the new CHEAP Uber steel.

For us to write day after day how much we prefer SR-101 over what made us buy Scrap Yard Knives in the first place sickens me.

What must Dan think when he reads those comments?

Maybe that he should make a switch and change to SR-101 and drop his line of steel?

NEVER happen. Swamp Rat makes SR-101. Scrap Yard makes SR-77.

If he were to switch why would we need The Yard?

This place would become a SWAMP.

Sorry if this hits some of my brothers in the gut but I just don't want us to keep the battle cry up for a steel that is NOT ours. If you want more SR-101 they have a separate division for that.
If you need and want SR-77 you are in the right place.

Nice to have a cameo appearance, but THIS is NOT The Swamp.

Whew... end rant.

Peace.

Some people just never learn.

If it cuts, sharpens and doesn't snap in half when you beat the heck out of it it's all good to me.

And I would argue that 52100 is a better alloy for manufacturing knives than S7 is. A quick look at how many knifemakers use each alloy in the production of their knives should be education enough.
Especially when you drag it down to around -300F for about 24 hours. Then you have a knife!

From my perspective what makes Scrap Yard awesome is not any particular steel, but the best price to performance ratio in the business! At this point Busse-kin brings five great steels to the table: Infi, SR101, SR77, D2, 154CM (and in the past they have used S30V and A2). To limit each company to one particular steel doesn't make sense to me as that is not what defines them.

I am a Dog, and a Rat, and a Hog... all three and I don't see that as disloyal. I buy all three. I use all three. I love all three. I have preferences based on my personal use and what I have seen others that I trust experience.

Will SR77 serve you well? Yes
Will SR101 serve you well? Yes
Will Infi serve you well? Yes

Do I prefer them all equally? No, but that doesn't make me disloyal.

Nice rant, but factually incorrect. SR-77 was introduced on the SWAMP RAT crash axe, hence the SR in the name.

This whole loyalty to a steel is just plain silly, in my eyes. SR-101 is the superior steel for many applications, and to refuse to use it out of some misguided sense of honoring history is goofy.

What makes scrap yard blades scrap yard blades isnt their jackhammer tip steel - it's their inexpensive price and great performance. And at the moment, the biggest defining feature is the Res-C handles, not the steel... and I'm perfectly OK with that.

Dan could COMPLETELY DITCH SR-77 and I would be perfectly fine with it. In fact, I'd applaud the decision.

I'm loyal to the great people who make great products, not some chemical formula of their source materials.

In PoP's defense, I understand why he feels that SR77 is married to Scrap Yard. It's not his fault. It's DAN's fault for making so many great knives out of that alloy. But clearly, we shouldn't have any more loyalty to a specific alloy than Dan has.

If Dan is willing to change alloys or handle materials or whatever, we should be willing to do the same. That's the definition of loyalty AFAIC.

Bruce is right. It's about the company, not the steel.
Dan has made some very good knives out of different steels.
