I just picked up one of those HF belt sanders also but haven't ordered any belts yet. I'm planning on practicing on some cheap knives first. Apparently I will need the most practice doing the tips. Yours are looking good though, nice work!

I've found that if I complete each pass with one smooth motion it helps to alleviate some of my problems with tips. As I round the belly of the blade and near the tip, the handle comes out away from the belt to give it a uniform angle throughout. Otherwise, I leave a much shallower angle on the tip than the rest of the blade.

For 35 bucks, single speed is fine by me. I found its default speed to be pretty good for sharpening, so no real need to slow it down. It looks like you are getting it done for 35 bucks and that ain't bad at all ( plus belts) Kudos on ya as you got the balls to have at it. Lookin good- keep us posted

Is that a 'bama clay' NMSFNO?

I honestly have no clue what the color is called, and can't even really figure it out (I'm severely color blind).
All I know is, it has a hand-shaped micarta handle that is just about the most comfortable non-res-c handle I've ever held.

Way to take the next step mustard. I'm still working my way through the lower levels of knife sharpening and I am not yet confident enough to belt sand sharpen my blades. I guess not having a belt sander doesn't help either Congratualtions on progressing in your sharpening abilities

I try to keep the tip near one of the edges of the belt, to avoid rounding it off - but I haven't exactly gotten the technique down yet. Hopefully someone who's better at this than me can chime in and give BOTH of us some tips.... 1. Try to keep the edge perpendicular to the direction of the belt as you approach the point. This means lifting the handle as you sharpen the belly. This will help maintain the same or nearly the same angle that you have on the straight part of the blade. 2. Do not drag the point across the belt. 3. When using the coarser grit belts, remove the blade from the belt as soon as the tip reaches the outside of the belt. You can get the point area sharp better later on when you are using the finer grit belts. Be careful. It is easy to over heat the steel right at the point. I hope this helps. The edge and point area on your NMSFNO look fine to me.

15.25, that is my lunch money!
Great job, this is why I want to get a sander. And thanks for sharing.

for the orignial flat grinds I use the platen/back plate which works fine (and really fast-watch it!) and I removed the table (useless).
easier for me to touch up in the field a flat grind than a convex edge.
