I'm about to trade a swamp rat vex for a scrapper 6. I like the vex ok but it just doesnt' fit my hand that well and just isn't a "must keep" for me. I'm really excited about this trade proposition and getting my hands on a 6 (it will be my second scrap yard knife behind the SOD). I just can't figure out what the person who offered the trade means in an e-mail he sent me when he says "factory fresh. Let me know I can get extensive pics taken. Never been sheathed, always carefully taken in and out of cardboard sheath but no apparent smoothing. I forgot if it has a gap or not." The part I don't understand is the last part about forgetting if it has a gap or not. I have no idea what this means and some alarm bells went off. Can anyone tell me what he may mean by this. I wrote back to him asking what he meant but I have yet to receive a reply and I wanted y'alls opinions anyway. Any ideas? Thanks.

The gap he's referring to is a gap between the res-c handle and the blade. I've only seen pics online - lucky for me, all my res-c has been tight against the blades.

Ok thanks Mustard. Should I be concerned? I'm assuming that since he wrote that, there probably is a "gap". If this is the case should it give me cause for pause?

id ask for pics of the gap....since you never know....but it sounds like a good trade to me if you dont dig the vex. im sure the gap cant be THAT bad if they let it leave the shop....

Is the "gap" something you could send back to SY for repair? I've seen other SY blade auctions saying that they have talked to SY about fixing small imperfections on their knives. I don't know how true it is as I didn't bid, just curious if anyone else has had any experience w/ this.

The worst Res-C/steel gaps happened in the SS4. I fixed mine with clear 50 year silicone caulk. The clear caulk took on the black color of the Res-C, so you had to look close to notice the fill job. The silicone is still sealing the old handle gap to this day.
It’s a non-issue.

We found a few blades with a small gap like stated (if that is what he means) and SY said they would replace it and or make it right if we wanted. I don't recall hearing about the S6 with it but it was no big deal and didn't seem to effect anything, even if it did they have a lifetime warranty!
I'd say don't sweat it and enjoy! FYI Ted had one and said he was going to "heat treat it" himself, I never did read if he did or the results.... "Ohhhh Ted?!"

With the SS4s, I recall reading posts where people used a lighter to heat the Res-C and then mold/push it to the blade while still soft. However, I haven't done that myself. It seemed more of an issue to people using their knives for food prep in the kitchen (food possibly getting into the gap and bacteria growing there) than for folks using their knives in the field.
