I can't remember how long it took the DF to arrive after it was announced, but it was AT LEAST 3 weeks. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

sure felt like way longer than that. especially after he released the first test pics.

I get the sense that Dan has been working on this awhile already. His announcement post clearly identified some military needs for the product. His posted photo looks professionally prepared for marketing materials.

My guess is that he's got a bunch of military customers already lined up that he's motivated to service as fast as he can. My B2B experience says he has to get a bunch of early production samples out to these guys ASAP for qualification if he hasn't already. So my takeaway is that he's pretty close to full production.

All of this is pure speculation on my part, however. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Pure speculation with some merit. I like the sounds of it!

Kraz - I hope you're right - but I'm not holding my breath yet! I think it'll be a little bit... I'm also thinking that he's going to be making a large run (I hope he has enough handles!!!). I've definately got to get one of these. I am hoping very seriously that I'll be in town on the night of the release. A release by the end of the month would guarantee that for me! So again, Kraz, I sure hop you're right!

Well, I hope I'm right too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In a volume production environment with a new product in the production flow the normal practice is to ramp the production rate at some (carefully chosen) increasing volume rate. This allows the manufacturing team to get the bugs out of their assembly and test procedures and to begin optimizing the production processes for even higher volumes.

In my experience, ramping new products always brings some surprises. The goal is to minimize the scrap and rework required to get the product out, as well as ensure the quality is consistently high to avoid expensive returns.

Anyway, this long boring explanation is why I don't think he'll immediately go into "full" production but step it up in increments instead. He may already be well along in his product ramp...only the Shadow(dog) knows.
