i'll admit that i have zapped a few players sticking the wrong adapters on stuff. not because i didn't know better but because i have so many power adapters that many of them started to look the same and/or i'd have 2-3 plugged up at a time and i'd grab the wrong wire and shove it in.

modern players have that anti-shock crap which takes a sample of your music, like an mp3. that's what you're listening to on those things, not the CD. The bitrate of the sample is unknown to me, but i'd wager it varies among manufacturers.

the old CD players don't have that, or you can at least turn it off.

they also have a true line out separate from the headphone jack.

So basically any old discman is fine? Some are going for like 3 dollars and some are going for like 25-50 bucks.

I will have to order one in. Headphones first...
