So I think I'm gonna quit my job tomorrow. I haven't decided for sure yet - am waiting for my fiance to get home and talk it over with her, but I think it's probably gonna happen.
I've decided I am just not interested in a career in research based academia - I think the clincher was when my adviser admonished me for only working 40 hours a week, and said she is working 80 hours a week. That's salaried, with no overtime pay.
Research pays dirt, has crappy quality of life, and expects you to work yourself to death. I thought I liked the science enough to look past all the downsides, but it's just not worth it. There are lots of things I can do with a PhD in physics that will either pay a whole lot better, or be a whole lot less stressful.

unless you're desperate, your bread and butter shouldn't make you hate waking up. any response from those applications you've been mentioning?

Good luck on the job hunt. I've wanted to quit mine for a long, long time. I'm just worried about the economy. I'm actually going back for either a grad degree or another bachelor. I just don't know what yet. I'm thinking about taking physics next semester. I just don't know what I want to be when I grow up--well I do but I'm not sure if custom bike builder will provide a steady income.

No response from those - but those are a minimum six month application process.
I plan to find something fun and interesting nearby for the short term, and keep working on teaching focused job applications for the long term. I like the teaching, just don't like the hours reading papers and writing grant proposals and all the other crap that comes with research science.
I don't actually hate my job - I just don't think it's worth the amount of work it takes to be successful at it. I value my family and my extra-curricular activities too much to make my whole life be about work.
