Been there for the 80 hour weeks while on a salary. When the economy is good the higher ups get a big bonus and you get a 2 to 3% raise. When the economy is bad you get extra work and no raise. For some its worth it but not to me. For a while I was working to jobs and I was only getting every second Sunday off. Did it for about 2 years, when my oldest daughter was about 18 months old I picked her up and she started screaming because she didn't know me. I put my 2 weeks notice in on the "part time" job that day I chose my family first and 20 years later I can say I never regreted a minute of it.
MM you have portable skills so use them as you see fit

MM you have portable skills so use them as you see fit amen brother....i only saw my son on sundays.....boss had a "be lucky you even have a job" attitude and subsequently just about made us her slaves (paying us when we get to the first job, not when we start loading equip into trucks from the shop). i did notify the labor board...anyways...family first all the way! my son will only be little once and id never forgive myself for missing it. youre a smart guy MM im sure you'll come up with something! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the kind words guys - unfortunately, this level of pressure is really common in academia, so some of my "real life" friends, who are also in academics, were trying to talk me out of it. Most in my field take the view that it's just normal to work crazy hours and not make much money, with the idea being that when you FINALLY get tenure someday down the line, it will be worth it.
I'd much rather have a few more weekends in the woods than tenure.

of course, if they're the one's doing it, it seems worth it to them. i'm in a similar position and asking around you'll hear the "stick with it" from people who are doing it and "don't make yourself miserable" from those who aren't.
i say work has to be worth it. you didn't put all that effort into your education to be unhappy with your career.
