Some suggest that the racking sound gives away your position. Some also suggest that you don't want to give the bad guys the chance to shoot first That's a good point. My shotgun's not loaded anyway. I use my 9mm for security detail.

I think more education and other programs that give youth hope is the best way to help fight crime. You need a multi prong approach but it needs to include those aspects That's very true..The problem around here is the gangs and the way they recruit high school kids to commit crimes. If they get caught they are underage and get released the next day. We've got the same problem here centered around the drug trade.

well, i have two thoughts in response to that.
one, if he's not deterred, i'm glad i still have a shotgun.
two, if deterrent is your primary objective, i'd rather have a pistol, even small caliber, with a laser aiming module. that red dot on your chest has got to be terrifying, no matter the caliber.
still, refer to part one. maybe a shotgun with a loud action and a laser (just for intimidation) would be the best option.

Even the Sheriff himself said that folks should be prepared to care for themselves It's not just a good idea, it's the law! POLICE HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT THE INDIVIDUAL (NOR SHOULD THEY)Police have no legal duty to respond and prevent crime or protect the victim. There have BEEN OVER 10 various supreme and state court cases the individual has never won. Notably, the Supreme Court STATED about the responsibility of police for the security of your family and loved ones is "You, and only you, are responsible for your security and the security of your family and loved ones. That was the essence of a U.S. Supreme Court decision in the early 1980's when they ruled that the police do not have a duty to protect you as an individual, but to protect society as a whole."

I need a little schooling on shotgun ammo...
I have a box of "Federal Game Load" that says, "1 oz. shot, 8 shot"
Is that 8 one ounce bbs?
How does that compare to other "home defense" loads? Joe - that refers to a total weight of 1 ounce of size #8 shot, which is really birdshot. Generally, you want larger size pellets for home defense in order to stop an intruder though any shot at very close range will help. The smallest that I like is #4 buckshot, up to the aforementioned duplex load. Just keep in mind that a shotgun is normally a close range weapon unless you are shooting slugs.

Thanks Tom, that's very helpful. The 8 shot is fun for plinking, but I should get something a little more substantial.
Thanks again.
Ok, I'm off to bed.

I totally agree, which is why I recommend a 12 gauge shotgun with buckshot.
