I just prefer to pop off with the thumb and pull up, and then just slam it back into the sheath.
I am 6'4" with really long arms though, so I dont really notice the extra reach. I am only 5'9" so that may be a factor. Leaning towards the open spine design... There isnt anything wrong with it...mine works awesome. Just personal preference really. I like it...just not quite as much as my regular BB kydex.
