My Dad worked on rebuilding OTR trucks for about 20 years and did a lot of welding. Back then they never used anything and at times the smoke would gag you. It would get so thick they would have to open the shop doors to let some of it ventilate outside. He welded a lot of truck frames together. His largest buildup started with nothing more than the front axle and wheels. He build a complete 18wheeler around that and did it in enough time that the company made about 15K profit.

Wow! Sounds like some serious skill to me.

I'm just starting to learn myself. Want to be able to bring some extra skills to the table.

I'm doing the welding in a small garage with no ventilation unless I open the door. The smoke does get really thick really fast. They are still trying to determine all the potential problems from inhaling too much of it, but now a days you just know breathing a lot of smoke can't be good.

Once Many years ago, when I was a young strapping lad, we had some friends that lived out in Idaho up near the border (he was a logger). Any way, we went up to the Calgary Stampede. Boy was that impressive, specially for a 12 year old.

and I have a bunch of these on order:

They do the nuisance level organic vapors as well.

These filters are good enough to allow you to weld galvanized metal without concern for the fumes that result! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

Guess I'm bragging, but not intending to , the State inspector stopped coming around to inspect the welding job if he found out that Dad is the one that did it. Kinda made me proud. He would not just weld the frame together using a butt weld, but would cut out a diamond shape piece of steel about 18 inches long and as wide as the frame rails were tall and weld that in as additional support. he also had some jugs he built up just to keep everything straight as he worked on it.

Beautiful!

Not bragging to me. I love to hear about craftsmen doing what they do best.

You know, just breathing in some cities now days is hazardous to your health. When I was stationed in Japan (on the outskirts of Tokyo) there was this one area that was so bad your eyes would actually burn from all the pollution in in the air. It was of course in a low lying area so everything either stayed there or filtered down cause it was heavier than the air. i never has sinus problems until I got back to the States from there.

My father was a mechanic in the military for 35 years, so I grew up loving that kind of work.

I have never, in my life, seen Dad to fail to get something done, made or what ever when he set out to do it. Sort of funny, but It would be beyond me. He found this old HEAVY schwinn 1 speed bicycle. It must have been from back in the 50's and he made a 21 speed out of it! Honest to goodness, and it workes like a champ! Goofiest thing I ever saw. Got these big beach comber handle bars, a heavy steel pipe frame and 21 speeds! Has to edit this, can't spell for squat and MS Word spell checker don't work here. Hey maybe we can get Dan to add that to the site.
