Recoil is not bad on the 7.62x39mm. More than the .223 but not too much. What caliber rifles have you shot before, any shotties?

dreamy indeed. i'd be plenty pleased with a garand guy restoration. $1k seems reasonable, too.

I still might do the CMP route, since they will take my hunters education card for the shooting requirement. Then all I need to do is join a club. I think it would make a fine addition to my M1A.

AK action rifles bang the casings up pretty bad, might bot be able to salvage them for reloading (or at least many times).

only handguns, mostly 9mm. that's about all you see around here since most are educated by the movies.
the only .22 rifle i have access to is an army ranger's Savage.

Whats up Pink. They do bang the mouth up, but if you are reloading the sizer die works them back into shape.

Well, IIRC you lift so the recoil should not be a problem. There are 10 year old kids shooting the 7.62x39mm rd all over the world--and some of them are pretty small kids.

7.62 is $100 for 500 rounds of brown bear. i'll buy four cases with the rifle and still pay less than an AR demands.

i'm not worrying about handling the recoil physically, just my accuracy and follow up shots.

Yep, and more effective on solid targets. I have shot a variety of things in my life and the 7.62x39mm cartridge does some wondrous things. If you go with that round, look at the Yugo ammo. Yugo ammo is brass cased, comes in a 1200 rd case that is spam canned, and uses the M67 bullet instead of theM43 bullet. The down side of the Yugo ammo is it is corrosive. Corrosive is not that big of a deal, easy to clean but takes a couple more steps. Reason I mention the M67 vs the M43 bullet is because the M67 bullet is better on soft targets such as flesh, etc.
