The 240B is a great piece of kit. Reliable as they get. I'm not overly enthused about the SAW. I kind of wish the Army would have went the way of the M-60E4/Mk43 to fill that niche.

I've actually never fired a 240B - so I don't have any real comparison - but I think that the SAW in 7.62 would be pretty mean! I was issued the M249 for about 2 years and liked it overall. That show on Discovery "future weapons" showed the 7.62 SAW and it looked like it was performing well. That show also had the MLRS on there as a "future weapon" - I guess the munitions are constantly improving, but the firing piece hasn't changed for like 7 years or so since the M270A2's came out (I was an MLRS crewman for 3 years). Anyways, I don't always take "future weapons" to heart - but I did like the portion about the new SAW.

Don't use a pressssive press and if must then be sure to weigh "every round".

Safety bulletin...................

I pulled this off another forum very interesting"

Continuos reloading and chambering of the same round
may cause catastrophic
failure in semiautomatic handguns.

The security force at the Los Alimitos National
Laboratory recently reported on
the catastrophic failure of a semiautomatic handgun
when it was fired. The
internal explosion caused the frame to break while the
slide and barrel
separated from the weapon and traveled down range. An
investigation revealed
that the security personnel were repeatedly charging
(loading) the same round of
ammunition into the chamber.

Technical personnel at Glock Inc. Advise that repeated
chambering of the same
round may cause the bullet to move deeper in the
casing, further compacting the
propellant (gun powder ). If the propellant is further
compacted beyond factory
spec's, the pressure may increase beyond the guns
specifications causing it to
break apart. Sigarms Inc.'s personnel confirm that
reloading the same round five
or six times will cause the problems, noting that
reloading the same round even
once will void their warranty. Both manufacturers
stress the problem is not with
the gun but with loading the same round repeatedly

In around 1978 we upgraded our coaxs in our M60A1 tanks with M240s. I forget what the old one was, but it wasn't very reliable. The 240s were outstanding. Those early models had three rates of fire that were adjusted by a gas aperture. When we first got them, we set them on high rate. Engaging popup silhouettes, we could barely traverse fast enough to keep from running out of ammo! We sliced those targets in half like a light saber. Good MG. Glad our boys in the infantry are getting them. It is based on the old BAR design. John Browning's legacy lives on.

I got to carry the 240 around the streets of Baghdad! I tell you it was the most painful fun ever! Dismounted with it and a few hundred rounds....I hate being the big guy!

Yeah, I always got stuck with the M-60. That was reason enough to go armor over infantry. Why die tired? Then I found out the infantry was about all mech and I was always attached to them anyway. Doh! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

Bors - I've noticed that before - I actually asked my Sergeant about it at the old PD that I used to do reserve work for - I noticed that my top 2 rounds in my magazine had little wrinkles in the casings from repeat chambering. He told me that he never takes his out of the chamber and doesn't have to worry about it - so I've tried to take mine out less frequently - I always keep one loaded in my bedside pistol safe anyways... Great info though - I'm going to take a few rounds out of my magazines as a result of your post.

I can't believe that you're not supposed to load a round more than 1 time though - that is just unreasonable!
