The hard drive failed and the logic board failed. It would cost more to repair than it is worth.

Do you have any idea whether a dead 3 year old top of the line MacBook Pro would have any value being sold for parts?

There would be some value for sure. Just need to find a buyer. Pull the hard drive and put the whole thing on ebay. Might go for a decent price. If you pull the drive then there is no risk of someone recovering any of your private info.

I understand what you are saying, but it's a matter of use and perspective. Since I use this for processing pictures for my business, it's not a toy; it's primarily a tool. For working on pictures, website, ebook, etc., stuff like a big and bright screen, a fast processor, lots of memory, etc., make life easier. When you factor in the value of work time, it comes out less expensive in the long run than the apparently cheaper alternatives.
