ahh... it has never really mattered to me if it has tubes, ribbons, or tassels. think of this stuff like tools and you should be okay. a butter knife can be a screwdriver but it will never be as good as a screwdriver for screws just like a screwdriver can spread butter but it would be a real pain. ribbon mics are known to be fragile and just like "toobz" used to be. ts a latest greatest thing... they can keep chasing that stuff but somewhere is a guy making some great songs with a sm58 or radio shack mic or something.
