Rather than taking a large knife for chopping, have you considered a folding saw? With the combination of a light folding saw and a knife around the S5's size, you can do an awful lot. You can split large logs with a small knife to baton, plus a couple of pre-carved wedges, and you can cut off pieces of fallen trees easily with a good folding saw. The saws also usually save a fair bit of both weight and energy compared to either a hatchet or a chopper-sized knife.

Thanks MM, I will definitely consider the folding saw. I have a lot to think about. I don't want to hijack HD's thread though so I guess I'll take the current suggestions and figure something out. Thanks for the replies.

Vic thanks for the pics and review, always good. I guess the Bravo 1 was too small to fit in the review?

Great pics and review HD!

Would you say from your experience here with the S5 that it would make a sufficient hiking/camping knife? The reason I ask, is that I am planning a hiking/camping trip to the Smokeys in September and I'm trying to decide what knife to take along in addition to my EDC folder. The knife needs to be light and fit in my Vulture II pack. It also needs to be able to do regular camp chores like cutting up food, rope, etc...It also needs to be able to chop some wood if necessary either by chopping or by batoning (also shaving wood and cutting up smaller pieces for fire starting). Do you feel the S5 is up for this type of work or would I be better off carrying my Camp Tramp or a larger knife? I'm thinking the DF and the RD-9 are too heavy and large so the S5 would be perfect if it is up to the tasks...?

Thanks.

I think the SOD or Camp Tramp would be a better choice for a camp knife. Neither is really heavy and they both can chop well. But if you are back packing and trying to keep the weight down, the S5 can do it all. It's just a lot more work trying to chop with a small light knife than a larger knife, but it can be done. If you don't plan on chopping much wood, the S5 is certainly a great light all-around knife that can do it all. It's bigger than the 4" blade survival knives that are quite popular with outdoorsmen and survivalists. If I had to chose between the S5 and my $600+ Bear Grylls knife, I'd go with the Scrapper. We have seen from the Waki tests that SR101 is tough enough.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

The Bravo-1 has a 4.25" blade. It compares with the YK or SS4. I have been asking for 5" Bravo, but he made a 3.75" Gunny, 7" Bravo-2 and soon a 9" or 10" Bravo-3 is coming. I prefer a 5" to 6" blade for an all-around fixed blade knife. I carry a 4" folder all the time anyway.

Nice review Horn Dog! I like knives in the 4-5" size category for hiking and backpacking. I like 6-7" knives as camp knives. I love the big 9-10" choppers, but they usually only come along on car camping trips.

Thanks HD. I think I'm convinced now to take the Camp Tramp (or a hatchet or folding saw) if I know there will/might be chopping/cutting wood involved...otherwise the S5 should do for hiking and regular camp type chores.
