Howdy Gang. I am not very experienced with firearms. I dont own any at the moment. I have shot various pistols and rifles years ago.
I am thinking of getting a 22 cal rifle. I would be using it for plinking, and since it would be my only firearm,it would be the only thing available for home security. (In chicago,a law abiding citizen can not own a handgun) ((However, the gang banging thugs seem to have all the rights)) At one point in my life I owned a Ruger 10/22. I thought that thing was great. What is the scoop on 22's these days, any better than the ruger? Anything kind of "tactical" on the market? (maybe upgrade mods?) I am looking at a 22 because ammo is cheap and seems to be readily available. Thanks

I think the Ruger 10/22 is still a good choice. High capacity magazines are available for it. At close range with a 25 rd mag full of High Velocity HP ammo, it could be a formidable defense weapon.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

The 10/22 is a great .22 rifle. Ruger still makes high quality guns. The 10/22 has a lot of acessories too like different stocks, barrels, magazines to add to your rifle.

Big +1 with what the above guys said. 10-22 is a great gun. I had a "T" model that would put them into a dime at 50 yards. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Yes to the 10/22. Also, The GSG .22 is a nice rifle, looks tactical, and has a good rep. Made in Germany (German Sports Gun), kinda looks like an HK MP-5. They have a few models I believe. One looks like an AK. They run around $500.00, but most seem to think they're worth it.

I have shot the HK MP5 looking one and it was ok. I think the company that makes the AK and MP5 is also making the AR-15 M4 for Colt. If it were me I would stay with a Ruger because they is a lot of support for them. The company that makes the .22 lr knock offs mentioned above is actually an airsoft manufacturer. You might look into the below threads too. http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=6&f=41http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=6&f=11

I have seen a lot of cool aftermarket add-ons for 10/22. Different stocks, carbon fiber barrels, trigger sets. You can do sky's the limit. I have a stock one and have never shot it. Bought it used for 70.00. I like my old Win Mod 69A, bolt action from the 60's(?). Great little ground hog killer. Had a Rem. Nylon 77, POC. The GSG is very cool. But the 10/22 is proven.

i have a 10/22 and have had it for about 3 years now its pretty accurate and very reliable by now ive shot 15,000 to 20,000 rounds through mine, its compleatly stock and i just clean it after every weekend and keeps running great but i can tell i nees a new ejector for it cuz its not ejecting the shells very well anymore. for home securety a 10/22 would be your best option IMO there are high capacity mags every where for them and TONS of mods for them, you could get a colapsable stock for it which would make it good for moving in the house or to make it a little smaller if you have younger kids in the house who may have to use it someday
When was the last time you steped out in the woods?

The 10/22 is a great choice. You have a ton of addons and mods you can do. But it's great out of the box also. check out http://www.rimfirecentral.com
