I got a wonderful sheath from Mr. Brown, and have put my S5 into action. The first test was on my fertilizer round. Cutting open bags of fertilizer. I realize this is not much of a test, but hey....I get to carry and use the beast. After one day the untreated blade rusted completely across the edge. No big deal.... 30 seconds on the belt sander and all is well. Nothing....and I mean nothing of a non stainless or coated steel will remain untainted by fertilizer. It is the most corrosive stuff that I know of. No complaints, just an observation. The S5's are great....I love them more every time I use them.

Happy cutting my brothers!

Did you get any pics? I don't remember ever thinking SR101 was rust proof, they say Infi is much more rust resistant.

SR-101 is the least rust resistant of the Busse-kin steels. Still shouldn't be an issue though if you maintain it.

I know it is more likely to rust then S77. I am a pic retard, so no pics. I am not complaining, I just remember people talking about the potential rust issues with SR101. No big deal.

SR-101 DOES indeed rust and it can rust VERY fast if moderately wet.

I will often see rust within a few minutes when stripping and grinding on any SR-101 as I dunk my blade in water often when grinding. The parts I am not grinding on will start rusting as I am grinding and that is considering the blade gets at least "warm" enough to the touch to evaporate any and all water within a minute or so.

Make no mistakes about how readily SR-101 can rust. It rusts quite well. I am sure one of the MAIN reasons for not offering many satin SR-101 blades is largely related to SR-101's ability to rust so quickly and easily.

So, don't think you can use SR-101 out in the rain or with wet sheaths and not have rust. You will if you don't oil or wax the exposed steel.

That said, I use Ren-Wax on my SR-101 blades and I highly recommend Ren-Wax or some similar corrosion resisting lube.

If you KNOW how SR-101 rusts, it is plenty easy to maintain and a great knife steel. But, it does require some maintanence.

.

I've found tuff cloths to be pretty effective at preventing rust on SR-101, and they don't leave your blade with that greased up feeling. Marine tuff cloths seem to be the best.

I used to think 1095 rusted pretty quickly, until I got my hands on some SR-101. Looks like Recon Seed was right - that stuff DOES rust as soon as you look at it

I've bead blasted SR101 and applied Teflon/bake on finish that has held up ok. Duracoat is alittle better , but once blasted using synthetic mobile ONE , or Tetralube has kept the corrosion off even here in Fla.

A light wipe down after an application of some silicone spray works for all of the various steels I have owned.
