Hey Guys,

Anyone ever try their hand at flint knapping a knife ? It's pretty fun (although challenging) and gives you a great sense of pride when you can actually finish a knife.

I took lessons for about six months and I am pretty confident I went through a couple of tons of flint before I was actually able to complete a functional (yet crude) knife.

I'd love to try to knap an obsidian knife but it's just such an expensive material for a rookie like me.

If I can figure out how to post a picture I'd show you my latest creation.

I've never knapped, but I thought it might be interesting to try and bought a couple of instructional videos about it. My interest extended from the movie "The Hunted" starring Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones. I thought it would be an interesting survival skill to learn, but it's not something you can do well with just any rocks or without a lot of skill and practice.

It seems to be one of those skills that was crucial to our development as a species. My understanding is that a well crafted knife can be sharper then any metal blade. Ok, well, maybe not Horndog's...

Not sure if they are sharper ? I have yet to see a knapped knife that was not "serrated" (which is the hardest part of completing a knaped knife without breaking it). Can you compare a serrated knife's sharpness to a non-serrated knife ?

BTW I still can't figure out how to post a pic. That link that Andy has on his Pork Links site says I don't have permission to view it.

Andy - can you send me your e-mail address so you can post one for me ? If you are not comfortable with that I understand.

ColtMan, just type [img][/img] and paste the link location in between.
Use a site like photobucket to upload them to and get a link(right click the pic and copy image location).
After you get a link it'll look something like this:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh39/arturotostado3/KoolAid1.jpg?t=1249783943

Just delete the last part (?t=whatever) and put it between the image quotations.

And that should do it.
