I just saw a cool little fire starter kit from RAT cutlery. You guys have probably seen it before but it's a fire steel tool that has a hollow water proof handle on it to store fishing line, hooks, matches etc... and the cap to the water proof handle has a small built in compass. Pretty cool in my opinion

I know the one you're talking about CM...It is very cool- but I think the button compass has to be added by you. They show it with one but it isn't included.

Here you go. I believe you can glue a button compass in the lid but it isn't included... RAT FireSteel It seems pretty cool and has some basic survival instruction on the outside.

the misch rod on that firesteel creates a mean spark that stays lit longer then standard firesteels.

It looses the ability to be attached to a sheath easily as it is quite a bulky item....a little gimicky for me....

Looks like it would take up a lot of space, if you have a really small kit.

I like misch metal fire steels, but the little canister on the end seems pretty useless to me.

Might be a pretty good deal to throw into a limited pack just because it can store, supposedly comes with the button compass now, and the ability to start fire. For me, I will keep my regular compass, fire steel, and larger pack of stuff.

I've never had a real need to use fire steel. But then again my camping experiences have mainly been in deer camp or fish camp and I'm sleeping in a trailer so I guess that's not really roughing it. I did think this was a pretty interesting product considering the type of fire steel used

The canister is perfect for petro jelly cottonballs. I have tried the firesteel on a number of materials and I'd be hard pressed to find a better, faster way of starting a fire.
Edited to add:
Works great in windy conditions. Seriously starts fires fast.
