So, last night I was trying to bend some kydex over my S5CG, heated the plastic in the oven, bent it around my Scrapper and put it in the press.

I noticed the knife gets pretty hot from being in contact with the kydex (taken out of a 350 degree oven), which retain heat for a long time, and was wondering if this could mess up the heat treat of the knife? How about if I use a heat gun on the kydex while the knife is sitting in it?

I don't think that is hot enough to damage the heat treat..

I've had a knife sitting on the dash board of a car get hot enough to deform the kydex, and I've never worried that the heat in a car is enough to damage the heat treat. I think you oughtta be fine.

Thanks, I figured as much. Better safe than sorry, right?

I was more concerned with my Spyderco Swick (tiny piece of S30V) that got a big blast of the heatgun before I thought it through.

Not sure Kydex forming is for me anyway, it really is a PITA to get right it seems, especially fold over. Tried to sandwich knife between two pieces and got much better definition on the kydex, unfortunately they were scrap pieces and not nearly big enough to make a full size sheath for the S5.

Sustained heat would be a problem, since knives are tempered by baking them in ovens for hours at a time. But I don't think you need to worry about it with transient contact. People have been stirring fires and retrieving kettles and lost forks for centuries using a knife among the coals and there's no harm done.

If you're really worried about this, you could quench the knife in water as soon as the plastic is firm. Or even make a wooden form to bend on so the knife doesn't get hot at all.

Yeah, the "tempering" bit just shot into my head when my small neck knife was really hot and I thought "oh hell, I wonder if I'm ruining anything here". I did cool it down immediately. Just wanted confirmation from all you dogs that I was being an idiot for even thinking about it, thanks! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

No worries on the heat generated from working with Kydex. Bend away.
