I happen to own a Tormek Super Grind 2000. This "grinder" rotates a circular wheel through a water bath, just about eliminating any heating issues. I have several sharpening/grinding Tormek jigs including one specifically for knife sharpening. Since the wheel is round it does make an edge with a slight hollow grind. I doubt my grinder would be good for making major changes to a blade but I was wondering whether I might for instance: grind a false edge on the top of my knife, place a little more curve in the belly of the blade, create a finner edge.....

I am not actually thinking about making any changes to my soon to arrive knife at this point. I would certainly use the knife as it arrives for a while to see how well it works for me as is. I am just wondering if some do make changes if they find they want to use the knife for jobs that the blade design does not excel at?

Cutting up,

Mick

There are definitely lots of people who mod their Busse family knives, but many use a 1x30 or 1x42 belt sander, rather than a wheel grinder.

Horn Dog, who posts regularly around here, has taken a few coated saber ground blades and turned them into satin full convex. He's had some very, very nice results.

changing them really doesnt interest me much i figure if i want a different design im gonna buy a diferent knife or make one. I see no point in changing a perfectly good design line, but alot of folks around here do it and seem to love it. The only thing i will probably ever change is stripping a couple and thinning an edge out here and there

So lowder,

When you say "thinning an edge out", what exactly are you talking about doing?

I made a few pocket knife kits using mostly Dremel gear. I considered buying a belt sander of some kind to work handles and blades. I did not do it mostly because I determined that the kit parts were not going to produce the results I wanted. I have a couple small belts that fit on my Inca band saw and I have been
revisiting the idea of buying a "real" belt sander for: wood working chores, sharpening/cleaning/regrinding mower blades, polishing... Maybe a belt sander is in my future.

Mick - you can get a VERY functional 1x30 belt sander at Harbor Freight for about 40 bucks. You will spend more on the belts than you do the sander. A lot of people do a lot of sharpening/grinding/polishing on those cheap harbor freight sanders - including me

I have an old Delta water wheel sharpener. It does a hollow gind, but it works. I used it on my old Ranger knives to thin the edge a bit. Nowadays my Kalamazoo belt sander does the work much faster, prettier, and does a convex rather than hollow (concave) edge. Sometimes just thinning the final edge angle a little really improves cutting and chopping performance. No need to do full convex grinds and such unless you have a lot of time and just want one. My only Busse-made full convex blades that I still have are my Busse NMSFNO, Skinny ASH-1, and Sarsquatches. But the NMSFNO and Sarsquatch already had a convex grind to start with, so I really didn't change anything except eliminate the v grind final edges. I just blended the convex grind all the way to the final "zero" edges. Oh yeah, I did do a full convex on the Waki.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

wow! just got on that was exactly what i was gonna say mustard. As a matter of fact ive got a 1x30 from harbor freight i started on and its a pretty good grinder. I've done quit a few blades on it,but im ready to step up to something bigger cuz its just not powerful enuf to do the gigger blades and it takes longer than it should to do the smaller ones. It really was not built for blade making uses though, but it does work. I think it was more intended for woodworking purposes, but for 35 dollars ya cant go wrong. I highly recomend buying one, As far as what blades would i thin the edge on goes only the bigger/thicker ones like the dog father.

I'm not sure I would know what to do with the HF sander. Can't have too many tools.

i fully agree you can never have too many tools. well even if someone decided to buy it to start out on grinding and decided it was time for an upgrade its still not a waste of money cuz its dang handy for doing your scale work
