I will post this question here as well, so what makes a machete a machete instead of just a large knife? I have taken out my NMFBM before and had people comment on it being a machete, is it the blade length or thickness. Take the MOAB, 14+ inch long blade certainly qualifies it as a machete but the thickness and design say large knife?

A machete is a type of knife. My dictionary says it is a large heavy bladed knife used to cut sugar cane, etc, or as a weapon. Some of the Busse forum members got a little upset when I called the new Bushwacker a machete. But it fits the definition. I mean, there are thin, light, flexible machetes and there are heavy ones. Some even have a bowie style clip point like the MOAB. I know that most machetes are cheap stamped steel ones, so maybe some folks feel insulted to call any Busse a machete. But if you show that MOAB to the average person, he will call it a machete.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

I guess it is all subjective, nobody wants to say they spent 2400.00 on a machete or even 200.00, they want to refer to them as big knifes... it is interesting though, you will see why I brought this up in a couple of weeks

I agree with you Bruce, so in theory then, depending on the person swinging it one could call the MOAB a machete, granted the fella would have to be really strong..... but still

agreed, I was purely saying that "IF" there was a person, who was large and strong enough to where the MOAB seemed light and fast to him then one could call it a machete. Granted it would not be either light or fast in my hands

To me BWM is a crossover between a machete and a large chopper, and I will use it accordingly. Big plus is that it won't weigh me down very much, and it can be used for a variety of tasks. I wouldn't call it a machete, but don't mind if people would.

It really doesn't matter to me what type of knife some call machetes. Try getting agreement on what makes a golok or bowie or bolo and you run into the same controversy. Machete is a very generic term to me. All of them are large knives used to slash or chop stuff. There are bolo machetes, bowie machetes, golok machetes, barong machetes, sugar cane machetes, combat machetes, Salvadoran machetes, Panga machetes, camp machetes, and probably a few more.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.
