I was using a well known knife a few days ago when I bent the tip. I thought maybe I was doing something beyond normal use and was abusing it. I did the same thing with my scrap yard DM and my Busse SarQ just to see if I was doing too much. Niether of them was hurt in the least.

What I was doing is sticking the tip into a piece of wood and prying out splinters for tender. I drove the knife in about 3/4 of an inche and pried it to one side with the meager strength of my hands. I wasnt getting behind it with my body weight either. The knife was in front of me, I leaned it over and it bent.

This just makes me even more happy to own good steel from a good company.

I am however disapointed that I bent the tip of what I thought was a good knife. I could probably bend it back and be ok, but I want to send it in for a warranty claim.

Sorry to here about your knife. I'd try to contact Ontario about it.

I have to say, I don't think you should dismiss this knife as being a good knife. If it's an RD and anything like Justin's RD6 that I have, the tip is probably thinner than a lot of Busse kin knives. I just checked mine out compared to my S5, and the S5 has a thicker tip. I'd say that it's just a part of the design, not a flaw in the steel. Keep in mind that the SarQ is a saber grind which makes for a thicker tip. Any of the DM knives have pretty thick tips, too.

Again, sorry to hear about your knife!

Sorry to hear that, hope the company is reasonable. Kinda shows why we have such faith in bussekin though.

Before I bought it, I asked if warranty covered the blades and it did. I think it will all work out, but I have certainly lost faith in that knife design though. I will stick with Busse-kin from here on out.

Yeah, I don't think I'd subject the tip on my RD6 to the same things as most of my scrappers, but I don't do much prying with the tip so it doesn't bother me. I guess I'm just saying that maybe the tip is too thin for what you will use it for, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad design. Some people like finer points for more detailed tasks.

What you might want to do is look into exchanging it for an Afghan. I know it's a slightly shorter knife, but since the tip is closer to the full height of the blade, it has a thicker tip. In other words, the closer the tip is to the center line, like on the RDs, the thinner the metal is to make the tip out of. I just looked at my Justin made Afghan and the tip is noticeably thicker than my RD6. Just a thought. Good luck on getting things worked out!

Yeah, not my finest testing moment. But the warranty was solid and I have a new one. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Ranger knives are pretty tough. The point bent but did not snap off. I don't know what Ontario's warranty is. Best contact them. A lot of point strength has to do with the grind. As tough as Scrappers are, you just know that the Bird Dog is not for prying. But the Regulator can do it all day. My old school Ranger RD7 has a tough point.
