Was at the local surplus store the other day (seem to spend a lot of time there) Was looking at the MRE's that they have there. A 2 serving pack was $12.95. I'm sure that I can make up something tasty and nourishing for less than that. Just need to get the dehydrator going, and fire up the foodsaver.
Well, maybe after Christmas...hehe..
Cheers

I'm building a 20 shelf dehydrator in the spring.

20 Shelf! What kind of heat source you gonna have to use for that thing? Will one that large work without spoiling some of the food before it looses enough water content?

no heat my friend! The key to dehydration of food is AIR CIRCULATION! Couple of 6" computer fans and a old puter power supply does the trick very nicely.

I always thought you had to have some heat, like just a 40 watt bulb or something. Didn't know that just AIR alone would do it without spoiling. Thanks.

some say heat, some say air, some say air and heat.
really depends on WHAT you are dehydrating.......meat should have some warmth and air circ, veggies can be done with just air circ

Once when I was stationed in Idaho at Mt. Home AFB we dried some salmon that way, in a store bought dehydrator. Turned out pretty good. It did of course, have a heat source and no fan. Had to keep rotating the trays, no big deal but was a pain to (for me) remember to do.

I busted a few military MRE's out today. Broke them down out of package, then broke out of the cardboard containers. I pack them into whatever pack along with the nutritional part of the cardboard for size saving. Seeing this thread got me to thinking about meat, berries, fruit, veggies, and some nuts. I will be looking into a dehydrator after Christmas. Thanks for getting me thinking!
