I'm halfway through it now and I have to say it is an awesome book!

Had me in tears at one point.

I need to finish so I can check out the film as well.

Get "Bushcraft" by Mors Kochanski.
You can get them at Ben's Backwoods, or off of Mors's own website
http://www.karamat.com/

Another one that I've just started reading is "Earth Abides" (fiction).
Can't say much about it yet, as I've just started reading it.

If you are into non-fiction, there's Cody Lundin's 98.6 degrees
and Les Stroud's (Survivorman) Survive book.

Cheers

Doc, you're right. Besides Sean Penn directed the film and I don't agree with him on anything.

I didn't know Penn directed that film.... by the time it was over, I was completely disgusted....and didn't watch the credits.

I think that McCandliss, the book, and the movie, take away from real individuals that chose a "free from the world" lifestyle and learned from others willing to help and give them the real "how to" so they could survive.

I've read and enjoyed: To the Top of Denali by Bill Sherwonit (a collction of stories on Denali) and Minus 148 by Art Davidson (the story of the first winter ascent of Denali).

I just finished Into the Wilderness . The book spent a lot of time on McCandless' back story and others who seek the wilderness experience. It focused a little on his experience in the Alaskan wilderness as there is little information other than his journal (mostly listing his meals) and photographs that were left by him. I can respect his desire to be in the wilderness, but I was shocked by his utter lack of respect for the surroundings into which he moved. He was absolutely unprepared for his adventure. In his time in Alaska, he lived ten miles down a trail, across a river. He crossed the river during a time when it was low and got stuck on the wrong side as the snow melted and the river rose into a raging torrent. If he'd had a map, he'd had a better chance at making it out (ten miles back own the trail to a road) in the Alaskan summer. Krakauer did an excellent job researching his backstory and paited a picture of a boy who had little respect for anyone but himself.

I have Krakauer's Into Thin Air still to read. (Everest ascent and disaster)

Robert Heinlein put out a science fiction book about survival called
"Tunnel in the Sky".
It was a pretty good read.
I'm looking at Bushcraft by Mors Kochanski right now.
Lots of info in that one.

Cheers

DotD: I was just thinking about that book the other night. Have read it several times. And YES, it DOES have some good tips. IE- NEVER THROW YOUR KNIFE AT GAME!

Hehe....that was good...I wish that they made a movie of that book.
It would be cool to see him running around trying to get that critter.

It's a pretty inspirational book, and makes one think of what is actually,
truly valuable, not just what the advertising world would want us to have.

I've read it twice now.

Another one that is a very thoughtful read, and makes one think of the society
that we live in, is "The Wrong End of Time" by John Brunner

Cheers
