The vast majority of folks who sell on the secondary market are not the scalpers and flippers. I have chosen to NOT buy from those few people, but that won't stop me from buying any second-hand Busse ever.

I sell knives, and I sell them at a markup... but I have never bought a knife knowing I was going to sell it, and I have definitely never bought ten of that same knife to re-sell it. And I don't buy knives from those who do.

I have proxy'ed three or four times as many knives as I have re-sold for a profit, and have often offered knives I had listed at a profit to other dogs at cost. No amount of hemming and hawing or excuses will make me think the scalpers' actions are anything other than greed.

Anyone know anything about those swamp rat customs? Are they INFI also or SR101? How about length/thickness specs? I started out with swamp rat, have 1 Busse, but am now all about the yard as the true keepers or the price to performance ratio. that being said, "free" kinda brings swamp rat back into my kind of price to performance.

thanks for the help,
damon

Those "scalpers" and "flippers" you complain about are helping to support the market that allows you to sell your knives at a profit whenever you feel like it. If you can't see that, there's not much more I can say.

Do you honestly think the prices of second hand knives would go down if the number of knives available dropped because a few people weren't flipping a bunch of knives after every show?

If you do, you're delusional. I'd love to see the logic to support this idea.

In fact, there's data to support the exact opposite. Look at what happens to knife prices after the big shows - they drop for a month or two, because the market is flooded with a bunch of knives from the flippers.

I just can't comprehend how you argue that more knives being sold, in gigantic "here are 60 different blades I picked up just to sell" threads is somehow driving prices UP. That's crazy talk.

You've been around long enough to know that ordinary market dynamics don't apply to the Bussekin secondary market.

oh but they do. unlike other manufacturers, who produce on a continuous basis rather than a limited basis, and being the sole supplier to the world of the magical substance known as INFI, Busse is basically has a monopoly on their very own precious metal. don't compare it to knives. compare it to gold, silver, etc..

If you don't like the way the secondary market in Bussekin knives operates, don't complain. Just don't buy OR SELL knives there. Problem solved.

you cannot tell me that you don't see the greed in snatching an early order of as many blades as one can afford for the deliberate purpose of denying another so they have to get it from you.

that's the only type of sale i find disagreeable. we like it here in the yard for our sense of community, united by the knives. that is the antithesis, so surely you can see why i feel the way i do.

EXACTLY! How someone can even argue that this sort of behavior is healthy for the market or some such other crap is beyond me. It's sleazy - snatching up knives that others want, denying them the chance to get them from the source, for the sake of ripping them off later.

I'm glad we are better than that here in the Yard, and am disappointed to see one of our own defending such behavior.

I just can't comprehend how complaining about it makes you think it's going to change anything. It won't.

I don't think it will change their actions directly. But I do know for a fact that it has cost them business, because several folks have emailed me saying they agree with me, and I have convinced them not to buy from certain individuals. That's a small victory.

I just don't get the "it's not going to change so you shouldn't complain" mentality - if something sucks, I'm going to complain about it, and maybe it will change and maybe it won't, but I'm sure as heck not going to sit back and ignore it.

Well if it's capitalism at work, I hope they have business licenses and pay taxes on their earnings. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
