So my sister and her husband gave me this cool present for Christmas!

Not the Scrapper 5, but the bow drill! Her husband taught me the basics of using it, so I'll have to go out and practice until I'm good at it!

It's better to have it & not need it, than to need it & not have it.

I just learned how to use one this past summer, it was a lot of work the first time but it gets progressively easier, I think now it only takes me a minute or two. definately a fun skill. good luck

Looks cool.

I could never start a fire with one of those.

Good stuff. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> A friend of mine taught me how to drill for fire, and let me use his tools. I think that's really the best way to learn how: to use a drill set that is "known good". The drilling itself is already a bit of a trick, it's very hard to learn how to do it effectively if your tools are fighting you. You can only go about building a bow drill of your own if you know how it's supposed to work. Confidence and mindset is an issue here too. People are infinitely more likely to give up if they are working alone on something they have never seen demonstrated, versus working with a teacher.

That is cool. I really need to try that out sometime.
