Hi,
I am not a hunter, but my brother in law is. His knife is some random blade he bought at a truck stop. I want to upgrade that for him. Is the Muk or the Bird Dog a good blade for hunters? If so why? Thanks a million for your help fellas.

I think the Bird Dog LE is a great hunting knife.
The shape of the blade is great for gutting/skinning big game and cleaning small game and fish too.

the muk is the better all round hunting/bush knife. broader, thicker blade.
the bird dog is the better filetting, cleaning, gutting knife, better for detail work.

The Pits Bro.....I am confused....how can you say that the muck is better as a hunting knife and then in the next line say that the BD is better at pretty much everything that a average hunter will be using a knife for.
The question is; What blade is better for a hunter? I am a hunter and have been a long time. I carry a knife that will allow me to complete the task of processing game on site. The average "hunter" takes a knife that will allow a multitude of game processing possibilities. It also depends on what the intended game is. If I were going deer hunting I would want a knife that would allow me to gut, skin, and butcher a animal of that size. A Muck would be great at doing such and for that matter so would a Bird Dog. With that being said, if I was going rabbit, squirrel, bird or any smaller game hunting the Muck would not be as useful as a blade design like the Bird Dog.
So in my opinion the Bird Dog is "overall" a better multi-purpose hunting blade for a guy that really does not have a good selection of knives to start out with.

He didn't say it was a better hunting knife - he said it was a better hunting / bush knife. A bush knife does more than skin game. I wouldn't want to build a fire with nothing but the BDLE on my person, for example.

Where's POP? He's got a sweet Muk/Bird Dog combo in a custom Rainwalker.
Very nice!

Thanks a million for your help fellas. I like the Bird Dog as a small game hunting knife...great on rabbits and birds. I suspect it will do a nice job on fish but I haven't used it for that ...yet. The Muk will also work for hunting. I like the 6 for deer. Although last year I left my 6 at home on the table and ended up cleaning two deer with a Dog Father I choked up on the point for the fine cuts...it worked but its a bunch of knife for cleaning. A smaller...shorter blade is much better for maneuverability. I haven't used my 5 on a hunt yet but it will also do the job. Some of the other Dogs who are hunters should jump in and give you some ideas of what they use Dan

I'd say it also depends on how you process your deer. I don't hunt much (don't like to get up that early), but have been around for a cleaning or three in my day. Some folks like to use their knife to split the pelvis, for example, and for those folks a beefier blade is the ticket.
Others carry a hatchet or saw for that task, and use a much smaller folder for their skinning.
So really it's down to personal preference or style, and none of us knows your brother-in-law's preferences.

I hunt both deer and elk and use the Muk as my #1 blade. Also a great Busher as MM pointed out. I gut- skin- bone etc with it and you can belive that it stays sharp . If I keep the blade stropped- I never have to profile a new edge. I also really like the BDLE- but for an all around hunter/ Busher- the Muk wins hands down IMO
