If you want a woods knife, the Reg may not be it. Not saying that it won't do those tasks, just that there may be another model that will better.

The SOD is fantastic as a camp knife.

That's the thing, though - due to its improved, beefy point, which excels at tip work, and its better handle, I have argued that the Regulator is at least as good as a camp knife as the SoD... and with the full flat grind it is potentially a better camp knife than the SoD CG. Switching it to a saber grind likely negates that benefit. With the full flat grind, the Regulator is a better brush slasher than the SoD CG, and with the 1/3 inch thick full flat, it's a better splitting wedge, even if it does chew up your baton due to the aggressive clip point.

Maybe that's what Dan wanted, to make it more of a dedicated fighter and less of a quality camp knife, but if so that's disappointing, as I think the Test Team Regulator is one of the best woods knife designs ever put out by the Yard, and it is a shame to mess with such perfect blade geometry. Maybe making it worse at batoning is supposed to discourage people from using it for that task, since beefing up the top guard is difficult.

To make a perfect knife - the Regulator only needed two changes - a rounded choil and a better guard. The choil wasn't a dealbreaker, but the guard was a huge issue and it's a shame it hasn't been addressed Changing the blade geometry is a real bummer.

Visually I like the new version better and look forward to hearing the specs and price!

I imagine the changes are going to be based on the test team feedback and Dan's expertise, knowledge and vision for the blade.

Swamp with blades soon, the regulator, I just ordered a kukri last night...my bank acct is cringing!! hah!!

I am thinking that is going to be SR 77 rather than 101. That being said the new grind will take away from chopping- but should be a " bit" tougher. And- you would lose some edge retention - but not a huge deal. The biggest issue was the guard. Past that- I think the TT edition is an all around better camp knife . As for a fighter ? Don't know as how would I test that ? In theory- I suppose the edge might go to new version( fighter). I am just glad that I bought several of the TT versions.

Looking at my TT version. It appears the handle is shorter on the new version.

The more i think about it it makes sense from a business prospective that the handle and guard have not been changed. Blade geometry could be tweaked due to the fact that you are using blanks, but if the handles were already mass produced that's a big cost to eat if you have inventory sitting. This is more than likely why we see the same Res C on multiple knives, and it saves us cost which is fine by me most of the time! Just my 2 cents....

Clearly Res-C isn't an endangered species. For all I know, it might even be recyclable. So I'm not sure if the cost savings argument holds up where the handles are concerned. Where I think it DOES hold up is in the hardening process. I imagine that differential hardening involves more steps than through hardening. More steps means higher costs. And achieving a low price point may have been more important to Dan than creating a stronger blade . . . especially in a blade whose purpose doesn't necessarily require it to possess exemplary lateral strength.
Good point, but when is the last time you saw a live Res-C running around? In all seriousness though I think we all are on the right track I'm going to gear down in to the lets wait for specs mode.

Then why bother with a Test Team at all, if you won't correct the single biggest problem with the knife? The handle design is flawed - even in something like the SoD, the steel protrudes far enough to protect the res-c from being abraded by whatever you're cutting.

I've seen instructions on here on how to remove res-c handles. I'm tempted to do so and add a steel guard to my regulator to protect the handles. Originally I was hoping I wouldn't have to do something like that, and that they would fix the problem in the production version, but the lack of a fix and the change of blade geometry has me back at square one and thinking about how to fix the problem myself.

This is what the Regulator guard looked like after using it ONE TIME - for some chopping and batoning as part of a chopoff which I posted here. I was very impressed with the performance of the blade, and very disappointed in the design of the guard. It was such a huge issue that I assumed there was no way it wouldn't be addressed in the release version.
