I just picked up a Leatherman supertool 200 off the bay for a good price. I'll let you know how it works out.

I've had a Wave v1 for years and haven't had any problems with it, but haven;t used it under extreme use. Just got my son a Charge for his birthday. Man I am envious. About the same medium size and weight of the Wave, but with better quality steel (154cm on the primary blade), better locking, better ergo and fit, changable bits, etc. Really nice.

over the holidays i went on a multitool binge, and i must say that nothing beat the swisstool i had already been using. I also prefer the blast to the wave, if you were to go leatherman. the kick is beside me here at my desk. the blast is lashed to my maxpedition just because the sheath is molle compatible. right now, the gerber flick is on my belt and i've been carrying it without a knife. gasp!
still, the swisstool's quality and tool assortment never let me down. i never had that "wish i had bought X instead" feeling.

Kirk you are indeed a stand up fella! Really appreciate the offer, however I'm going to let my brother pick his preference and go from there.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I've sent him a link to the Swisstools and the leatherman line with info on the feedback to see what catches his eye!
I'm hoping that his tour won't be so long as to need a 25 year warranty! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I carry charge but for hard use I might say 300 or for sure the 98 swiss tool. the new ones do not open very wide and I found myself trying to use it and had to go get another tool because the jaw does not open wide enough. toughest pliers but less functional imo. the older swiss tool is amazing. as for schrade, the new ones are made in china and the lock is not ground as clean causing failures. the usa made model is better. I prefer the adjustable jaw schrade and believe it is the toughest multi ever made.

Just got a couple Leatherman Super Tool 200's. This is one solid tool, seems pretty bomb proof, it has some great tools on it too.
One of them had part of the release mechanism broken, I have no idea how anyone could have broken it but the knife did appear fairly abused (I'm not too happy with the sellers disclosure) The Leatherman factory store is right down the street from me so I will find out about their warranty.
I'll update after I get it back.

So last Friday I took my Leatherman Super Tool 200 in for repairs. Today I got a package in the mail. Leatherman couldn't fix it so they sent me a new Super Tool 300 and nylon sheath! This one is beefy and I like the design but I have heard after the 200s the quality has gone down. Gonna have to put this one to the test.

i've had my swisstool for awhile now and its pretty tough, you can hammer rail road spikes with this thing
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if you don't take it out and use it, it's going to rust.

I have heard nothing but good things about the swisstool, but I have a soft spot for Leatherman being a local company.

I have two Gerber multi-tools, and my experience with them couldn't be more different.
My "600" was given to me for college graduation in 1997, and been a great tool. I have not, however, used it for anything "really strenuous".
My "Crux" was bought by me in 2008, and while much more ergonomic doesn't seem to be made nearly as "tough" or precise (pliers line up poorly, etc).
I know this doesn't address the OP, but it does mimic the general consensus that "old Gerber" multi-tools are good-to-go, but the new ones are not.
