What do you like about the new Regulator?
Personally, the guard problem is not a problem for me because the only time I will be batoning is in an emergency and I could care less if the guard gets messed up if I am in a survival situation. Most of the knives today don't even have guards so what is the difference if it gets sheared off? I am not saying it will, I am just saying that if it came from the factory without guards, nobody would complain and nobody would have anything to cry about. It is a non-issue in my book.
I like the fact that Dan is trying to keep the price low. That above all else is why I will buy one. Anyone can make a good $400 knife but Scrapyard makes good knives that cost about $100 more or less and I think that takes more talent and commitment. They work harder for their money.
The big surprise was when Dan said it was cheaper to make flat ground blades than saber ground. I always thought flat ground was more expensive. That would be my only critique. I think most people would prefer full flat ground and if it was actually cheaper to make it that way, all the better.
If there was an option of this knife in full flat grind and saber, I would take the full flat grind. If the flat ground was cheaper, it is a no brainer. I don't know if it would be possible to offer both versions but it would be interesting to see how each sells. Even at the same price, I think the flat ground would sell better. I am not going to be slicing any tomatoes with it so it is not as big of a deal to me as if it were a pocket knife. I really love full flat grind in smaller knives because I can use them for food prep or cutting up an apple at lunch.
I have no weighed in on any of the Regulator comments yet because I wanted to give it some time and really think about it. At first I had some thoughts but after waiting a few weeks, I reconsidered what I felt and took a step back.
All in all, I like it. I don't give a crap about handle color or blade color. Black blade and tan handle is great, I don't need anything else.

I don't think the title of this thread is appropriate, considering the recent statement that negativity and snide little comments aren't to be tolerated...

I like that the price is being kept low. However, unless I mis-read Dan's redesign posting, the reason that's possible is due to large military orders, which have driven the design. For that reason, it makes little sense to criticize aspects of that design, specifically the choice of going with a saber vs a full-height grind. Dan explained that it was a performance-driven decision, so that's why it is what it is.
My gut feeling is that the Regulator will feel more blade-heavy than I'd prefer. I thought/hoped that the choice to go with a saber ground blade would allow the blade to be slimmer/lighter, but that isn't the case. Also, I haven't actually held a Regulator, so I don't know that it's blade-heavy, but Dan's classification of the Regulator as a chopper is a fair indication that it is.
I'll likely get at least a couple, maybe even several. Whether or not I end up loving the Regulator, as an investment, I doubt I'd loose any money on them after they go out of production.

I can't think of another busse-kin with this bowie profile...others or is this unique?
The profile has grown on me a bunch.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if you don't take it out and use it, it's going to rust.
