Is anyone planning on cutting off the top guard on their Regulator and if so, would that void the warranty? I ordered the Regulator but I have no need for the top guard. I figure if it gets in the way, I can cut it off. Anyone else thinking they might Deregulate on their own?

I am going to see if it gets damaged or in the way first. If it is not a problem, I don't see the point of messing with it. I do tend to place my thumb on the spine of a blade during some tasks so it might prove to be in my way. I just didn't see the point of paying extra for the Deregulator when I don't know if it is going to be a problem yet. If it proves to be, it is only Res-C and can be removed fairly easy.

That's just crazy talk! You can smooth out the Deregulator Beaver tooth marks with some sand paper. I suppose some will want to add a top guard to the Deregulator next. I'm with you, I ordered regulators because I think it looked better. I figured that if I didn't like the way it felt for use I would cut off the upper guard myself. I can see where for some uses it would be better with no top guard. I don't believe it would effect the warranty as they are offering some cut down from the factory. Now I wouldn't expect that they would replace the handle on a modified one if that was the only damage.

Nope don't trust myself to not really screw it up. I like the top guard so I bought two of those. Not sure about the Deregulator so I bought one of them.

At first I was hesitant about the top guard, but now I'm kind of looking forward to doing all my detail cutting with the guard. It's not like this is the first bushcraft knife ever to have one.
Even if I didn't like the top guard in any way, I would have a hard time justifying spending ten dollars and using Dan's valuable time just to have a super machine do what would take me a minute or two.

Dan mentioned that he made the Deregulator so that people wouldn't have to mess with their knives.

That is what I am thinking. I am not spending $10 to have someone cut a small piece of rubber for me. I am lazy but I am also cheap. I think this is a case where my cheapness outweighs my laziness.

Previous experience has shown that squirrels, not beavers, are the animal tools of choice for modifying Res-C.

I got bit, and will work the Dereg over. No use to start modding Res-C when I can get it done for a little bit.

hmmm. have yet to try modding a knife, but might be tempted. I was actually trying to imagine what it would look like with a stripped spine, and then have buy brown make me up an exposed spine sheath out of that mud flap kydex.

What about having a completely new custom exotic gaboon ebony handle made for the knife? Has anyone ever tried putting custom handles on?

Or bead blasting to strip it? Or would that damage it?

I was thinking the same thing when I chose to get the Regulator, if anyone does mod it, I'd love to see pics in due time. But in my opinion the Regulator looks way too good as is
