That 154CM steel is a bit hard to sharpen. The upside is, it holds an edge almost forever! An Arkansas stone just isn't hard or gritty enough to take any steel off that Muk. It will just polish it and make it slick. Assuming you already have good sharpening technique that you have used on other blades, try some courser sand paper to get the "cheek" off the edge and then once you have your new bevel or convex edge meeting (a burr), go to finer grits. That diamond rod should also cut it. A good diamond stone will also work fine. Good luck. I used my Kalamazoo belt sander to do mine. It is some hard steel, for sure.

ok ill give that a try. thanks horn dog. i would say im pretty good at sharpening...took a lot of practice on some of my cheap blades. i know im still not the best. i always knew 154cm was a hard steel... didnt know it was that much of a pain in the butt to sharpen though!

Pain in the butt is correct, but well worth the effort.

I'm still really new to sharpening but I managed to get a usable edge on my muk with some 2 sided stone I bought from homes depot. I can't seem to do anything with my SW HCLE. It's really starting to bug me that the whole time I have owned the knife it's never had any type of edge one it. I need to figure out something.

i used the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug to clean up the edge on my Muk today. it worked out pretty good, still didnt get it shaving sharp, but it did get sharper.

had another question... when using an Arkansas stone do you wet it or keep it dry?

I use a wore out Scotch Brite on a die grinder and it sharpens right up.

Hard to beat a good little Belt sander for getting a good edge on your blades!

I agree, send it to HD, hard to beat that Third World Grind Shop edge.
