Took my brothers-in-law out this weekend for some good ol' fashioned fun. Neither of them has ever chopped a log with a knife before, batoned, or thrown a knife...so I thought it was up to me to show them how much fun it could be.

Top that off with letting them fire their first handgun (we went through 200 or so rounds last Friday) and they had a great weekend where I'm sure they'll have some good memories. Hopefully we can do it again.

Here are some pics of the fun this weekend. We had, in total, the following blades that we used in no particular order:
-Swamp Rat Waki
-Scrap Yard Dogfather
-Swamp Rat Ratmandu
-Cold Steel True Flight
-Scrap Yard Mil Overrun Regulator
-Bark River Clax

Overall impressions from them are as follows:
-Waki "Man this thing is neat"
-Dogfather "This is like hitting the log with an axe!"
-Swamp Rat Ratmandu "Nifty little knife, let's see how hard we can throw it"
-Cold Steel True Flight "Wing that sucker, who cares if we break it?"
-Scrap Yard Overrun Regulator "This isn't a knife, this is a COMBAT knife!"
-Bark River Clax "This...is...SPARTAAAAAAA!"

Here are some pics of the fun weekend, as well as a few blade comparison shots of the ratmandu and my recently acquired Nephew of Dogfather, or Urban Mutt. Didn't actually use the Urban Mutt as I just got it yesterday, but thought you guys would like blade comparison shots of the urban mutt and as similar sized blade.

Enjoy!

I own both Claxs and Foresters (the single sharp-edged version). The handles aren't the most comfortable to me, but they are monster choppers. Who'd show some love for a Scrap Yard smatchet?

The clax is a lot of fun but I think I'd prefer the single-edged version, the Forester that Jim mentioned. I actually had a heck of a time finding a clax that someone didn't want an arm and a leg for (probably because they'd lost theirs using it lol) but a really great guy on the JD forums hooked me up. Part of the caveats of me buying it was that I had to promise to use it and take pictures. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I like the feel of the handle but I prefer the texture of micarta or res-c. I'm not the biggest fan of polished micarta. It looks really awesome (mine has the tigerstripe pattern I believe) and this sucker took massive chunks out of whatever we hit it with, but I would've preferred a handle with a bit more texture is all.

Size wise though yeah, it's not even fair to call this thing a knife. As many people have stated it's more like a short sword than anything, it definitely is a bit heftier than the dogfather (which is saying something).

Oh, forgot to mention we also had a hatchet (just a Kobalt from lowes, nothing fancy) and a nice old axe I've had for years to play around with. They threw the hatchet a lot and chopped a bunch of dead stumps up with the axe. I made them promise not to hit any living stuff behind the house, only to go after dead or already fallen stuff.

I'll try to get some of chopping and stuff next week. I put it through the rigors the other day and it performed very well, it definitely is one hefty chopper, I was impressed.

As far as the urban mutt goes it's a great neat little knife but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep that one yet.
