HD, I bet you enjoyed your steaks! I also performed a little chop-off between my SoD LE and my TT Reg. I found similar results to yours, but noted that it will take some getting used to the different shaped handle on the Reg. I felt a burn in the heel of my palm that I didn't get from the SoD handle.

HD - when I was out chopping with my Reg a little while ago I found (as you instructed) that the leverage was much improved if I held as far back on the handle as possible. I didn't work at it long enough to get very sweaty, but my hands were getting wet and a little concern about losing grip on (and/or control of) the knife overcame me.

Do you ever use a "safety lanyard" for this type of application?

I have done so on occasion. I don't do it with really long blades like machetes. I just wrap the handle in friction tape. I had a machete get away from me once and it whipped around on that lanyard and caught me in the knee. I still have blood stains on my walkway and back porch from that mishap.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Good review Vic as always, your report was exactly how I thought it would turn out, once I saw the over all size specs I looked right at the SOD and figured there's not much in the way the Reg could acomplish that the SOD couldn't... In my opinion it would be a good compromise for those that missed on the SOD..... The LE reg I think is exactly what this knife should have been on first release....

Thanks - that very issue is why I asked about safety lanyards. The idea of a 7.5" of SR101 swinging wildly from my wrist is a little disconcerting.

Not to hit a sensitive subject, but I prefer the Deregulator mod better because I like to lay my thumb along the blade, and the upper guard prevents me from holding the knife that way. That's why I passed on the Regulator LE, although otherwise it has a wonderful fighter balance and is nice and shiny.

I use a lanyard with the khukri I chop with, but it isn't an around-the-wrist sort of arrangement. I drilled a hole in the handle, and run a snug loop across the bottom and back of my hand and around my thumb. It takes some adjustment to get sized right, but then helps retain the knife in my hand. As Vic has noted, you're a lot better off just letting a knife fly once it slips out of your hand -- be careful to keep bystanders out of the way when you're chopping, but otherwise, just let it go. Some of the same rules apply when chopping with a big blade as with an axe -- accidents tend to happen if you let yourself get too tired and when you don't have good visibility.

NOTE: Text edited to correct my lanyard use description.

I don't really understand. Can you add a pic or two? It seems I might be interested in a similar set up.

Nice review Vic .... and I agree totally on chopping without a lanyard .... I don't use them and figure if I am THAT tired that I need it to help me keep my grip .... it is time to stop and take a breather ....

The only time I ever have any lanyard is on a SCUBA knife which is attached to the leg sheath by an elasticated cord or similarly if using a knife on a yacht I use the same type of set up .... and that is simply to prevent loss.
