Jim, I agree with you on the DeRegulator - it feels good in the hand. I had to get a Regulator LE just because I like the T/T so much!

Nice review and pics HD. Just curious, how do you think the Reg would fare against the Scrapper 6 or the S5 as a camp knife?

Glad you got the knife!

I drilled a hole in the handle, and run a snug loop across the bottom and front/palm of my hand and around my thumb. It takes some adjustment to get sized right, but then helps retain the knife in my hand.

I don't really understand. Can you add a pic or two? It seems I might be interested in a similar set up.

Actually, I'm glad you asked because I misspoke -- the lanyard wraps around the outside of my hand and around the thumb, not around the inside. Here are some pictures (although I noticed my grip is a bit higher up on the handle than would be the case during normal use because my grip was loose -- I also usually wear a pair of thin leather gloves because programmer hands blister easy):

If the weight of the khuk wants to pull out, the lanyard helps to anchor it to the bottom of the hand -- so long as the lanyard doesn't break or you don't remove it from your thumb, that knife isn't going anywhere. One last thing (although it doesn't really matter), I'm a right-hander but holding the knife in my left because my camera is nearly impossible to operate single-left-handed.

Thanks Jim. I appreciate the pics and extra explanation. Looks like a good system.
Does the lanyard cause a 'hot spot' on your hand from prolonged use? A buddy has a khuk with the same handle as that and I find that's a hot spot too. Those ridges are VERY prononced. I went with an 'Americanized' handle design.

I haven't noticed hot spots, although as I said, I wear leather work gloves whenever I chop. They're fairly light weight gloves so that I have pretty good manual dexterity, but are thick enough to protect my hands. I've found that a good quality pair of gloves that fit well are a worthwhile investment, but I definitely have the hands of an office worker, not an outdoorsman.

Gloves! Duh! I guess I forgot about the importance of gloves because your not wearing them in the pic.
I've been laid off from my job for a few months now and must say that I'm on my way to 'office worker' hands. Usually I can use JUST my hands to sharpen a knife!!! My gf doesn't like that but it sure comes in handy in the field!

Jim,

Thanks for the pics, and explanation. I'm going to try something similar with my Mil Reg.

Thanks for the pics Jim, it is easy to see how your use of the "lanyard" is useful without bringing it back into you.

I have tseted all three of these knives in tough outdoor conditions. Actually 4 couting the TT Reg. ( S-5-S6- Reg and TT Reg) That being said the Reg will suffice for a camp knife but is not as good as the S6 with the S5 a bit behind. As a straight fighter/comabt/ defense knife the TT Reg is the King IMO with the Mil overun right behind it. If I am in the bush-my Reg is great for shelter building and survival tasks and if I need a smaller blade I take out my Leatherman or a Vic Farmer that I have in my pack. The Reg is not the greatest camp knife- it will be adequate - but as for a defense knife- the thing is a beast and hard to beat . Just an awesome knife IMO.I also think that making sure you have a " scary sharp" edge on the knives like Vic applies is " key" to the success of ANY knife. This is my opinion- Vic might have another opinion. All are great knives under correct protocol. I don't think one knife does it all. Kinda like a house boat- it isn't a real good boat and it sure as hell isn't a great house -Thanks

Good call ordawg! I agree that one knife can`t do it all. There are a lot of chores for an extended stay camp. I think it`s important to carry at least 2 blades but maybe more so you have the right tool for the job.
A Wiener would not make a good chopper and a DG isn`t the best detailer. Both could work but they would be better as a team. IMO.
