Hey I was wondering if there is anything you could put on a satin finish to rustproof it, like a coating

only thing I've heard of is a blueing agent, other than oiling it of course

I usually wipe them down with Tuf-Cloth every once in a while if I'm worried about rust. It actually leaves a coating on the blade, that's supposed to be non-toxic too, but I always wipe blades off a little before using them on food.

It's better to have it & not need it, than to need it & not have it.

mineral oil

That's my suggestion for anyone who is gonna use there blade for food prep. Just a VERY light wipe as it is used as a
"lubrative laxative, and is often prescribed to ease the pain of bowel movements for those who suffer from hemorrhoids and constipation". [Quote taken from Wiki]
It's non toxic (in SMALL doses), cheap and easy to get.
That's what I use on my carbon blade khukuri to stop the rust. I haven't used the khukuri on food but at least I know I can if needed.

Good suggestion stj! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> I bought a 2nd hand Ratweiler last year that was missing the coating in a few spots. I had a quart can of truck-bed liner so I used that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

So far - so good! It was the Herculiner brand of coating that I used. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
