i've never slept in a bivy before. hoping to try it this season. i have a wenger dome that sleeps 4, though i've never shared it, and an ultralight hammock that rocks.

I like the bivy! Hammock to. I actually prefer the hammock. I don't like being on the ground if it can be avoided.

that big swiss army dome tent is pretty luxurious. it's too big for back packing, but i normally don't do that. I have to drive anyway, so i drive to the site then hike out.
driving will now be substituted for riding, hence the bivy.

I have a four man dome as well and I won't pack it. If I can drive to where I'm sleeping fine but otherwise NO way. It's older and weighs as much as my kid. HEAVY! Strong as heck though. I've had it for 15 yrs I think and I got it used from a buddy who had it for a while.

what i shoulda done was traded both the hammock and the tent for the skeeter beeter ultralight hammock. i could just hang the net over my current hammock, though. i always carry a tarp that i never end up using. could try combining that as well. have a little three layer system, all suspended from the same line.

I tried a sleeping in a hennessy hammock and just about froze. Your weight compresses the down in the sleeping bag and it loses it's insulating properties. Apparently, the insulation needs to go below the hammock. But, I love hammocks for lounging in warm weather.
I've not tried a bivy either. To me it seems like just a moisture resistant cover with a bug shield for your sleeping bag. Which doesn't seem that bad. I like the idea of it being a lightweight alternative to a tent.
