I'm trying to decide, with the following two photos, whether I should cut one of them out of my portfolio; and, if so, then which one. Or whether I should cut out both.

What do you think?

A) Silvery Blues, mating on fiddleneck?


B) Lustrous coppers, mating on [censored] paw

I think they're too similar, for me to have both.

I also think that perhaps they are not as strong as my strongest work, and don't belong in a showcase with the others.

That's a tough call, given that I've never seen your entire portfolio. Of the two, I would probably prefer the second. You can see the textures of the wings a little better, and the colors seem to pop a little better. The first is really nice, and if you need a vertical instead of a horizontal then it certainly isn't unworthy. But of the two, I like the second better.

Mike, if you're thinking of taking them both out, what do you have to replace them? Or is your folio overloaded with them? I was looking at mine today, I really need to put some current stuff in it. I haven't added anything since I was shooting for the paper, and I quit there 3 years ago.

I think things are too bloated, as it is.

I want to use this mainly for burning a sideshow onto DVD, and sending to photo editors, publishers, clients, etc.

Right now, it's at 96 pictures. I'd like it to be closer to 50 – or, at most, around 75. If you figure 5 seconds per picture, then even a 50 picture slideshow is over 4 minutes. I don't want to overly tax their attention.

I can understand that reasoning. They'll know if you've got what they want within a minute or two, at that pace. Probably after the first photo, from what I've seen.

And yet, I just added one, yesterday....

Do you do yours all on DVD or CD, or do you carry a printed portfolio?
