Our BOB's have good FAK's that include: CAT TQ's; QuikClot Powder; Israeli Bandages; Trauma Pads; Chest Seals; etc etc). However, our hiking gear and GHB's don't have the Hemostatic. Today I was at Gander Mountain, and saw "QuikClot Sport". This made me wonder about the effectiveness of the product so I wanted to know if anyone has used or witnessed use of this "civilian grade" product?

The packaging indicated its still exothermic, but says it only generates warmth while "real" QuikClot will burn you (due to high heat exothermic properties).

Before I buy a couple of the "Sport" model I'd like some feedback.

I carry a 50g in all my first aid kits and one in my trauma kit at work. Never had to use one on a person, but have used one on a injured dog while camping one time. The dog cut its leg and it kept bleeding, the quikclot stopped the bleeding and it didnt bleed again after applying the bandage. Best reccommendation to you is if you have to use one, try to slow the bleeding with a compress first then place the quikclot on it and wrap it up or else you will probably have to use several quikclots since they aren't as effective after saturation. I've never used the granular product either, but think it would be more effective at a wound that I can't get under control with a Izzy Bandage or TQ. The little "Sport" model sponge doesn't seem like a lot of product...especially for $10 at Gander Mountain (which means it cost about $0.50 everywhere else).

I think that if you want to carry the stuff around, you need to realize the potential its use entails for creating an unwanted thrombotic/embolic event. A tourniquet might be for life or limb use only. This stuff needs to be for life and death only situations because of the very real potential it has for an adverse and deadly outcome.

Well, quik clot type products are biochemically active coagulants. They effectively increase the propensity of your blood to clot up and form a thrombus in a n emergency situation. This is good. However, at the same time they increase the propensity of your blood to form a thromboembolism, which is nothing more than a mass of clotted blood that is floating around in your blood stream, waiting to lodge somewhere important and unintended, like you lungs, heart, or brain. The risk is even greater with a large vessel, emergent type situation than with a smaller wound. The larger vessel makes it easier for a clump of clotting blood or worse, a clump of the clotting agent(think lumps in batter, moistened and coherent on the outside while a raw powder on the inside, on a microscopic scale)to break loose and enter circulation.

I agree with StabbyJoe, only use in a life and death (emergency) situation. compression is a safer route I understand (pressure points).

Their was a really good thread at BF about this a couple years ago and I found out "celox" works much better than QC.

We found a lot of good info online about it and I got that instead. I got mine at amazon (more expensive) and I have it in our first-aid kits for a last ditch thing if I can't get to a doctor/hospital.

They tell us during our Combat Life Saver course (everyone now graduates basic training certified in first-line aid, how to treat a gunshot wound, sucking chest wounds, etc) they told us to apply either a pressure bandage or Direct pressure to minimize the chance of a thromboembolism, as Stabby was talking about, when using any quikclot product. The pressure will cause even non-treated blood to clot faster, thus lessening the chance of a piece breaking loose. And with any injury, but even more important, keep the wound wrapped tight (not cutting off circulation though, may as well have just used a tourniquet) and seek IMMEDIATE medical attention. It's meant to be a temporary solution, to keep you alive until you get to a surgeon, not a permanent fix.
