Hi Dogs,

Why do some people think we are crazy to spend over $50 on one knife (or a couple hundred+++ for that matter). My brother-inlaw spends $200 a month on cable, a cell phone is $100+, a cheap PC is $300+.
1-Will they be worthless (PC and cell phone) in 5 years YES.
2-Will they save my life? cell phone, maybe with 911, PC more likely to cause a stroke, I doubt I will ever email for help. Cable, sucks your life away, one hour at a time.
3-Can you give them to your kids, or is it cool to be buried with them? I would give my fav knife to my kids, a PC, a cell phone? No way, buried with them? Probably what killed me!

A good knife can appreciate, save my life, be passed on, or look cool in my casket, there is no fighting logic I say!

I think I'll keep that info in mind to use the next time I get that look from my wife about a knife purchase.

I concur captian. My dad and I put my grandfathers wood carving knives in his casket when we burried him. A distinct memory from my youth. It meant a heck of a lot to my father to explain to me what the tools had done, how they were used and to wrap them up and set them on my grandfathers chest. It hit me as well once I got older and realized the impact it had on my dad.

The only thing I requested from my other grandfathers "estate" was his pocket knife. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy, family members fighting over money, a house, cars. What a bunch of fools. I took his Schrade Old Timer rusted to hell, one of his flanel shirts and walked out of the house. I still carry this knife.

Simple solution. Don't tell anyone how much you spent. It's not really anyones business except perhaps your spouse.

Good knives and good guns are gifts to your children and their children. With the gift comes the responsibility of education. To the chagrin of my wife I am frequently giving knives away as gifts. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

My middle daughter got my only Spyderco folder. My oldest daughter recently got one of my favorite dress folders, an old Japanese made Kershaw. My son got a Mora for his birthday. My nephew will be getting a custom Stag & Steel 3" EDC with a belt sheath for his birthday.

Great thread, and great points. Jeeps - touching story. My dad carried his father's .357 while he was a cop, the same one that my grandfather carried while he was a police officer. His dad died when he was like 12 years old. Anyways, I've got my dad's 1911 that I carry - and if it was practical to carry that .357 I sure would - that would be a 3rd generation duty pistol! Having items to pass on to your kids and grandkids is much more special than just being able to give them a few thousand bucks when you die.

Yeah, not sure what it is about guns and knives that lend themselves to be passed down. The one thing that I have of my brothers is his Kimber 1911. I train with it, carry it and shoot it regularly.

You are so right , jmosh. When I look at the worthless crap people spend their money on, my knives seem like a bargain. I will continue collecting and using them until the day I die. I started as a shoe shine boy saving tips to buy barlows and bowie knives. My parents hated it, but when the affliction continued, they and my other family members accepted it. With some, it is clothes, or shoes or the latest electronic gadgets or games. With me, it is steel. Whenever any of my friends or family seek advice on guns or knives, they turn to me. I am sure many of you are in the same situation. I am a knife knut and proud of it.
