Oh. I have always liked good old 1095 myself. I have seen it fail on occasion, but generally, if the heat treating is right, it holds up well. That is just my personal experience. I have beat the heck out of my old Ontario Survival Bowie. It might fail tomorrow, but hasn't so far. It is my understanding that SR77 is much tougher.

Welcome Dingo, stick around. It is always a interesting time here at the Yard.

Peace.

Dan, is it just me or does the choil seem kind of puny on there?

PS: A month ago I had never heard of a choil. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

On such a small blade a finger choil isn't really needed IMO.

A small choil for those sharpening impaired dimwits among us is welcome, however. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Can't wait for this one. HR is one of my favorites. I just don't like the handle style on the new ones.

If it wasn't Scrappers would be made of 1095.

Seriously I love 1095 and the other 10 series steels but the reason Sr77 is better for knives is the extra alloys that the 10 series do not have. The Busse heat treat is also quite good. Some of my fave nonbusse knives are my Carbon V CS Tru Flight and my 1050 CRKT Sting. The CS is incredibly tough and has taken tip down hits to the cement in my basement dozens of times.

I would still imagine that 1095 would hold an edge longer than SR77 due to it's higher Carbon content !!!

Dan, please enlarge the choli on that blade to be more like the genII howling rat, or more like the street scrapper4. The posted pic of the scap yard howler shows a choli which is ugly and with little function imo. Please don't take this the wrong way, as i am a HUGE fan of the yard. I believe the reduced choli that swamp rat knives did to their howler from genII to the genIII (LM) killed the line and the character, intent and utility of the blade. In the current trim, i will definitely pass on the syhowler, but with a larger choli i would be down to buy for sure. please keep this in mind-
just one blade nut to another.

I prefer the Gen 1 Choil over the Gen 2.....haven't really used the HRLM so I can't say. But I like the design as is!
