hey Ish,
What would you say is your average yardage shot when you are hunting pig? 100+? I typically find myself in two scenarios: 1) stand hunting over bait....which we typically setup at 125 yards or so. 2) stalking through thickets....I like my red-dot with hi-caps for this, as shots and encounters are usually within 10-15 yards....and out to 50 yards given some type of scattering. The red-dot has proven great in tracking a moving target! I'm not ex-mil...so it has taken me some time to learn to use the system to the most avantage. That is exactly why I am asking because I plan on going for pig this summer and I have a red dot on now and I am getting really comfortable with at at 100yds.

Thats standing with a target of course so i figure at 50-75 I should be a decent enough shot to make a kill if I do see one.

The difficulty for me came from acquiring multiple targets while all were moving. The only way I even know to train it is to engage in such scenarios. Pig groups are FANTASTIC for this...it trains keeping both eyes open and quick acquisition with multiple moving targets.

Moving from the range to pigs (with red-dot) was night / day for me. I was raised with a bolt action hunting rig...and although we followed through with targets, we always had the weak eye closed and would "look up" to follow the target once the shot was off. With the red-dot...it's critical to maintain focus with both eyes open, and move from target to target. My dad still has problems...he still wants to look up after he fires. I've actually gotten pretty controlled. When I shot my spike back in November....I stayed on him as he ran about 20 yds and piled up.....I estimated that I could have pumped about 5 more rounds in him if I had wanted to. It was a turning point for me...

I've never really used my DF for much, cut a few branches back with it is about all. So I can't say how well it chops, but I'm going to find out soon enough...camping season is coming quick! Funny story, I was having some concrete poured and I had to clear some thick vines out that had grown over the fence, they were about an inch thick and I brought out the DF and started chopping it and after about 2 minutes I had it all cleared all the concrete guy said was " Im kinda scared of that knife...!" Great story!

Thats the hard part to train for...We usually buy a bunch of medium pumpkins and have one person throw them out while the other shoots.....I guess the only real training is to go...I just wanna make sure I make a humane kill. maybe I better start with a scope...

I used balloons at different ranges and heights to get used to transitioning between targets....both eyes open really helped there.

I tried at first with a 1-4 NF....the Aimpoint T-1 is insanely easier in acquiring / getting on targets. The good thing is....even if you see something out at 200yds....you can make a humane kill with a red dot. You initially think it's too far, but once you see them, it's rather easy to get on target and send it.

We sat up from 15 yards to 100 yards, and from 2 ft high to about 8 ft high, about 25 or so balloons at a time and practiced transition drills.

If and when I get another AR-15, it'll definately have a red dot of some type on it.
