+1 on the swiss army knife. Also if you have a Lowes, check there. I buy cheap ones when I fly, but the have better ones too.

I picked up a Spyderco Native from my Wal-Mart in VA, nice little knife.
A Kershaw Leek is pretty cool, but the assisted opening may freak out the sheeple. My fam thinks assisted openers are switch blades and they look shocked when I open one up in front of them.
Spyderco Byrds are decent enough for a first knife too as are many CRKT models.

I ended up buying my nephew a Leatherman Wave multitool for $68.94 @ Walmart.
I got to the knife section and it was a SAD Sight! just JUNK everywhere! Cheap 420hc/440abc crap, EVERYthing made in china, all in tacky-looking anti-theft clear plastic packs. NONE i would Ever carry myself!
Anways, thanks for some great ideas guys.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

I got to the knife section and it was a SAD Sight! Their sporting goods section in general is a sad sight. Several of the ones around here quit selling guns completely! Of course, it has nothing to do with politics! (Wink, Wink) They claim it’s because it’s areas with declining sales. Sam Walton would be kickin’ some a$$ if he saw what they’ve done with his namesake.

Yes, according to a manager I know at Walmart its all about demographics...rural stores keep the guns and urban areas get none.

The wave was a good choice. I carry one just about every day.

I used to carry a Gerber multi tool - the expensive one ($90?) and it was a piece of garbage... Handles sprung right away, a flathead screwdriver broke right off during normal use... Leatherman is the way to go!
