I had an adventure medical 2 person space blanket. It supposed to be plastic and mylar and have survival hints printed on the outside of the shell. I had used it years ago when we got caught in a nasty rain storm while out kayaking with the family. I set up a quick rain shelter and waited it out so the water would calm down.

It was still setting in the kayak so I unfolded it and saw all the reflective mylar was gone. So I sat outside on the deck using my body to make a me sized TeePee and used a candle lantern sitting between my knees. With the rain, no hat jacket or shoes I was comfortable and warm for the 15 minutes I stayed out there. It would do the trick in a pinch especially if you were dressed for the weather. I am guessing it would have been slightly warmer with the reflective stuff intact.
i keep one of those 36 hour emergency candles in my winter vehicle kit

Sounds like something to remember! Thanks for sharing! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Re: DIY - Tarp Mod - Glue Mylar to Inside of Tarp
by Bushcraft Bill » Mon Mar 28, 2011 11:11 am

I use one of them as a ground cloth and it works well for me but its not large enough for a shelter/tarp 5x7 just is not large enough the cost involved for mine was $12.00 for the tarp 6x $1.00 for the mylar and 2x $6.99 for the spray on glue and my time a couple hours to glue the mylar to the tarp

I seems that that would be a worth while project.

I am betting that if you had a GI ponch with a wubbie it would do very well.

Everyone should have a supply of those. Sadly, I don't, not at the moment.

I use a small candle lantern. With the 9 hour candles. I love those things. I probably have 4 floating around packs and vehicles.

I've got a lot to learn about stuff like that. I keep a couple florescent lanterns and some small LED flashlights stashed around, but everything depends on batteries.

good little stoves, haven't made any for a couple of years though, esbit stoves are too convenient

I always have a good supply of candles around the house, just need to be careful around kids, pets and combustibles.
I also have a few wind up flashlights as well as wall charging led flashlights

power rarely goes out at my place, but I grew up in a rural area where power outages were not uncommon
